Video: The Witness on PlayStation 4 / PS4: Creator Conversations

250°
69w ago - Thekla Incorporated President Jonathan Blow shared some video footage today which include conversations with the creators of upcoming title The Witness on the PlayStation 4 / PS4 video game console.

To quote: It's been a few months since our last post, so I think it's a nice time to let people know how the game is coming along.

If you haven't heard about The Witness, it is a game about exploration and puzzle-solving in an open world. Here's our trailer:

The open-world aspect of the design is important; it means you have freedom in terms of where you go and what puzzles you choose to approach right now. At any time you can just stop what you're doing, turn around and go somewhere else, and the game world has plenty of new things to show you.

It's interesting to try and design a puzzle game this way. Puzzle games are usually linear, because the designers want to make sure you have solved a puzzle before going on to a more difficult one.

But in The Witness we have a broader idea about what makes puzzles interesting, and this lets us be versatile in designing the flow of gameplay. We build systems of puzzles...

Karateka on PSN Today, From Prince of Persia Creator Jordan Mechner

50°
91w ago - Assistant Producer Heather D'Evelyn has announced that Karateka is pummeling onto PSN today, and is from Prince of Persia Creator Jordan Mechner.

Below are the details, to quote: I'm proud to announce the PlayStation Network release of Jordan Mechner's classic martial arts sidescroller, Karateka! Thirty years later, the 8-bit karate classic returns with all-new graphics and a unique rhythm-based gameplay.

As a college freshman in 1982, Jordan Mechner started work on the original Karateka with nothing more than an Apple II computer and a burning desire to become a published game author. Now, 30 years later, Mechner is back for more karate action, teaming up with Liquid Entertainment for a modern remake of Karateka with beautiful animation and innovative gameplay.

What's changed in the last 30 years of gaming? In the original game, you beat up a series of thugs to rescue the princess Mariko from the evil warlord Akuma. If you're defeated, that's it-game over. Alas, modern gamers aren't used to the cruel realism of the one-life scenario, so we introduce three different suitors, all attempting to rescue the princess.

If you die as the first one (the "True Love"), you continue as the second, then the third, allowing you to have more than one chance while maintaining...

Interview: Monkey Island Creator Ron Gilbert Descends Into The Cave

200°
92w ago - Sony Blog Manager Fred Dutton interviewed Monkey Island Creator Ron Gilbert today, who descends into The Cave with details below!

From the interview, to quote: If, like me, you grew up in the late '80s and early '90s it's likely that Ron Gilbert is responsible for many of your formative gaming experiences.

While at LucasArts he was responsible for a red-hot run of bona fide adventure game classics, including Maniac Mansion, Zak McKraken and the beloved Monkey Island series.

In January, he returns to the fray with The Cave, a delightful Sega-published 2D romp that, in true Maniac Mansion tradition, sees you picking three characters from a wildly diverse line-up of seven oddballs and descending into the titular caverns for all manner of puzzle-centric adventure.

From the brief section we've played, it's clear that Gilbert has lost none of his flair for fiendish puzzle design, barmy dialogue and madcap storytelling. It's shaping up to be a charming, challenging and wonderfully eccentric title that will both delight his core fans while being accessible enough to win plenty of new ones.

We caught up with the man himself when he was in London earlier this week to find out a little more about the project.

You've said that the concept for The...
