34w ago - It's been a few months since the last PS3 Debug / Test (DEX) Firmware 4.21 leak, however, we are now hearing reports that PS3 CEX to DEX Converted units are bricking when PlayStation 3 scene developers attempt to upgrade to Sony's OFW 4.30 DEX update.

This means if you have a converted unit and currently try to use the (not yet public / leaked) 4.30 DECH update you will get a brick... so consider yourself warned in advance!

What happens is when the bricked unit is powered on the light turns green for a few seconds, then you hear 3 beeps and its goes off.

It is suspected (unconfirmed) the reason why this bricking occurs in CEX to DEX converts on OFW 4.30 DEX is because the EID5 isn't changed, which is one factor separating the converted Retail to Debug / Test consoles from genuine and righteous DECH (DEX) consoles.

Finally, for those curious, the PS3 4.25 DEX update (also not publicly leaked yet) is not patched by Sony to brick converted consoles, so this would be the last PS3 Debug / Test Firmware you could update your converted console...

36w ago - Recently yayes of PS3ISO (linked above) shared a PS3 CEX to DEX to CEX tutorial and file pack for those interested in converting their PlayStation 3 CEX (Retail) console into a Debug / Test (DEX) unit and then being able to revert it back.

36w ago - Following up on their previous update, this weekend German PlayStation 3 developer IcEmAn (aka IcEmAn2012) has made available PS3 XMB CFW Mod v2 and XMB CFW Mod v2 for CEX / DEX consoles with details below.

Download: PS3 XMB CFW Mod v2 PKG / PS3 XMB CFW Mod Kit v2 PKG / Update 2.3 IcE-rX Media Manager.pkg

To quote, roughly translated: CFW XMB MOD v2

1. Install any CFW (3.55) you like
2. Install XMB_CFW_MOD_v2.pkg
3. Activate dev_blind
4. Copy the content of: hdd0/game/XMBCFWMOD/USRDIR/dev_flash to "FLASH"
5. Copy the content of: hdd0/game/XMBCFWMOD/USRDIR/dev_hdd0 to "internal hard drive" by using a file manager (multiMAN) or FTP
6. Disable dev_blind and start the console again

Notes:

• If an incorrect use of the flash memory, a brick-risk for the console! Under the category CB (PlayStation Category) can no longer be installed (CB is now 1p).
