Former SCEE boss: Only 3 in 10 Games earn back Dev Budgets

50°
311w ago - Former Sony boss Chris Deering has put up word that right now just 3 out of 10 games earn back their development budgets.

In addition to this he expects a greater inflex of game companies outside the video game industry to move into the market.

To quote: The gaming industry is still high on its rampant success even in the face of declining economies.

Even so, Deering warned that "traditional revenue sources will not be sufficient to fund games development" as the market continues to grow, and studios need to explore new business models in order to support themselves.

He claims that as of now, only 3 in 10 games earn back their development budgets, and soon companies outside the video game industry will be moving in on its markets.

The PS2 Controller that gets Tired as your Character gets Tired

50°
315w ago - Near Future Laboratory has put some information on their analog version of a PS2 controller for the PSX project online recently.

This is the one that slows the analog part of the controller down over time, so that when you play a title like Katamari Damacy the Prince will get tired. A lot more details are available linked above.

To quote in part: So, this is my analog version of a playful Playstation 2 controller for the PSX project – the one that slows the analog part of the controller down over time so, you know.. when I'm playing Katamari Damacy it's a bit more realistic that the Prince gets tired or during GTA, my guy actually gets tired from running away from liquor store heists and stuff.

I'm looking at two approaches. The first is digital – basically intercepting and modifying the communication between the console and the controller. (I've described the protocol, and there's lots of great, hard-gained information out and about describing how it works.)

This second, is a more expeditious design. Basically, I tap right into the PSX controller, putting a microcontroller in between the analog control joysticks and the little FPGA or whatever it is that senses the analog control joysticks.

So, my microcontroller determines where the control sticks...

Street Fighter's Chun Li Gets Dirty in Film

350°
322w ago - Capcom Japan has released the first photo of Smallville's Kristin Kreuk as Chun Li in Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li. As you can see, she's neither wearing her usual blue dress or have her hair wrapped in her trademark cute buns.

Fans shouldn't be surprised, however; the new Street Fighter film hopes to take the video game adaptation more seriously this time around instead of the Van Damme cheeseboulder that snuck up on the world in 1994 like one of Dhalsim's sly reacharounds. We're following Chun Li as she scours Thailand as a street fighter to find her father's killer, M. Bison (Neal McDonough).

Quick note: I don't know how, but she actually looks identical to how I imagined she would look when they announced the project–A dirty street fighter in Thailand, delving into the mucky muck. Street fighting isn't exactly a colorful world with costumes and junk.

Don't worry, though, because one of the storyboards released shows her with the stereotypical hair we all know and love.
