Sony Europe confirms 40GB PS3 as sole model on market; 60GB phased out

50°
377w ago - Sony has confirmed that the £299 40GB PS3 SKU will become the only PS3 model available in Europe once the current stock of 60GB PS3s have been depleted. To quote:

The specification of the new 40GB model has been determined following feedback from thousands of PS3 owners, and features two USB 2.0 ports rather than four and no longer includes the multi memory card port.

The new 40GB model is also no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 titles. This is due to a reduced emphasis placed on this feature by later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific games, which will number a total of 65 titles across all genres by Christmas 2007.

As with the PLAYSTATION 3 60GB, the 40GB model features system software updates allowing new features and functionality to be added to the system as time progresses.

In the UK and Ireland, a Value Pack consisting of a 60GB PS3 with extensive backwards compatibility and two first party titles will be on sale at a price of €499 (£349). Remaining on sale while stocks last, the 60GB model represents outstanding value for the keen gamer wishing to upgrade to the High Definition capabilities of PS3. Once stocks are exhausted the new 40GB model will be the only one available in the SCEE territories.

377w ago - From the source: Sony will announce tomorrow that has bowed to consumer pressure by not only reducing the price of its 60GB console, but also creating a 40GB version priced at £299 to go up against the Xbox 360 Elite.

Confirmed by multiple sources in the games industry in the UK, Pocket-lint has learnt that Sony Europe will officially drop the price of the games console in the UK by £56 to £369 in an attempt to boost sales ahead of the Christmas rush.

"We are currently under strict NDA, however that NDA runs out in the next 48 hours", a retail source told Pocket-lint.

As part of the deal the newly introduced value pack, which included an extra controller and games, will be phased out, Pocket-lint has been informed by multiple sources within the industry.

"Although we aren't sure when in October it's happening we are aware that the price will drop to £369, with shops probably selling for £349, and a 40GB model launching as well to compete against the Xbox 360", a major games publisher told Pocket-lint.

In attempt to offer an even more compelling alternative to the newly launched Xbox Elite, Sony has also said it will be launching a 40GB "Core" version.

As previously rumoured, the new PS3 console will still feature the Blu-ray drive as standard,...

Source: Sony unveiling cheaper 40GB PS3 this week

379w ago - A new report confirms earlier rumors that Sony will announce a $399 40GB PS3 as early as this week. According to Sky News, a manufacturing source has revealed that Taiwanese FoxConn (which also produces PS2s) will make the rumored $399 PS3. An announcement could come sometime this week in an effort to "spoil" the high profile launch of Halo 3 for Xbox 360 says Sky.

Previous reports speculated that Sony would drop the price of the 80GB PS3 to match the current price ($499) of the now discontinued 60GB PS3. In order to offer a $399 PS3, Sky News reports that Sony will either remove the console's USB ports or backwards compatibility.

Sony denied comment on the report when contacted by GamePro.

Sony: The PlayStation 3 is still a game machine

50°
379w ago - Despite previous attempts in promoting the PlayStation 3 as a super-computer, Blu-ray player, and multimedia device, Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai recalibrated the PS3 as a game console in statements made during his Tokyo Game Show keynote.

"As the fundamental point of our system, I think [PS3] is still a game machine," Hirai said (via GameLife). "We want people to first enjoy it for the possibility of interactive games. If we pursue too many directions, people will keep asking us, 'What is PlayStation?'"

The PlayStation exec took a somewhat humble tone during the keynote while admitting that the PS3 hasn't had the best of starts. As a result, the company hopes to listen further to ongoing gamer concerns.

To start, Sony promised better development support in addition to continued support of the popular PS2. To increase the quantity and quality of available games, the company plans to share assets and know-how with third-party publishers.

Additionally, Sony will solicit feedback from publishers by setting up an advisory board to meet on a regular basis Hirai said.
