EGM August '08 Rumor: Xbox 360 to get Hefty Price Cut this Fall

50°
338w ago - The latest rumor in the soon to be released issue of EGM (August, 2008) speculates that Microsoft is set to announce a huge price cut on Xbox 360 SKU's this fall.

This rumor comes courtesy of Clinton514 @ GAF.

No other details were given, but it's a well-known fact that Microsoft is aiming to appeal to a more casual gamer market... and by dropping the 360's price by a considerable margin it seems like the most logical step.

Time will tell for sure!

Sony says that the Disc-based Delivery System will fall

200°
339w ago - Those crazy Sony people. First they tell us that Blu-ray is the wave of the future, and now they say that digital downloads are. Make up your mind! :P

At a developer conference in London, SCEE president David Reeves said that the future is the PlayStation Network. He points out that internal figures that show over 40 per cent of PS3 owners download games direct to their machines.

Reeves told MCV UK: The key to the future is the PlayStation Network, Games put straight onto PSN are the big opportunity.

We do believe that the disc-based delivery system will fall as the power of the network base rises. At the same time, the overall industry growth will continue to go upwards as we push out into emerging markets.

What we don't see is an overall decline in the market. This is a golden era of video games.

So which is it, Sony? Hexus gaming points out that current games may never work as downloads. Think about Metal Gear Solid 4. Could you imagine trying to download that game?

I think there's room for both. Even though they are "proofing itself against the disaster the music industry has found itself in," games are still selling on discs.

I'd say keep the downloads for smaller games, and push the disc for big titles. Do you agree with Sony's...

GT5 Prologue vehicle deformation coming as early as Fall

50°
350w ago - Gran Turismo head Kazunori Yamauchi has officially confirmed vehicle damage for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue in an interview with IGN.

Yamuchi said vehicle damage could be included as a downloadable feature for GT5 Prologue as early as this Autumn.

To quote: In an interview with IGN earlier today, Yamauchi said that, "maybe by Fall we'll be able to implement it," before confirming that it would feature as a download for Prologue, which launched in the UK and across Europe last week.

Gran Turismo has long been famed for its refusal to include any vehicle deformation, despite heightening demands from its fan-base, and any inclusion of the feature would be a massive boon for the series.

Resistance: Fall of Man 2 - Autumn Release Confirmed!

550°
356w ago - Slipped into the bottom of a press release regarding the extension to Insomniac Games' 'Nocturnal' initiative comes the news that the PS3-exclusive, Resistance: Fall of Man 2 is due out in Autumn 2008.

The text reads: "Insomniac Games is currently developing Resistance 2(TM), which will release this fall, exclusively for PlayStation 3."

This would more than suggest, therefore, that the Easter egg hidden in the video below indicates not only more enemies, but a demo for July.

The news came as a tag to Insomniac's announcement of the second phase of its Nocturnal tech-sharing initiative, "in which it will share elements of its technology source code and presentations free of charge with the worldwide development community".

The technology source code in question is firmly PlayStation 3 focused. The first (R&D) phase was launched in August 2007 and was last updated on the 30th of January this year. The addition to Nocturnal comes in the form of a Wiki. This is described as follows:

"Our goal is to develop an open collection of libraries and utilities for addressing common challenges in game development.

Nocturnal is not a game engine. The libraries provided here are potentially very useful for developing a game...
