Has Microsoft's XBox 360 Console Run Out of Technical Steam?

550°
295w ago - Whenever the issue of the Xbox 360 running out of technical steam is risen, you always get the same answer, "there's still more it can do", no offence but this excuse is getting old pretty quickly.

Is there really any thing left in the Xbox 360, hardware wise? I really don't think so.

It's been 3 years and still there are less than a handful of games that have pushed the visual boat that much farther, notably... Gears of War and Gears of War 2, what else has really brought outstanding graphics to the table? Halo 3?

In contrast in just 2 years the PS3 has seen exclusives games that easily destroy what is on the Xbox 360, games like Killzone 2, Uncharted and Metal Gear Solid 4 spring quickly to mind, and these are out of what has been released, looking at what is still ahead, Uncharted 2, God of War 3 and Heavy Rain, the pattern looks set to continue.

So how in 3 years the console has only 1 series producing great graphics, and when one compares the visuals of gears of war 2 to that of the first, the difference isn't much...

My question is 'what really is left in the Xbox 360' technically? I know developers can get more out of the console through art styles and optimisation but it looks to me like the main bulk of tech hardware in the Xbox 360 has been squeezed dry.

Video: New Wii Exploit? Run Custom Code on an UnModded Wii

298w ago - Below is a video titled 'BaNNeRBoMB' by TheRealTracePillars via YouTube, and according to it a new Wii exploit has been found in the system menu allowing you to run custom code on an unmodified Wii console.

To quote: Alright, sorry about the crappy quality but I didn't want to use my capture card because people would call it fake and stuff like that.

This is a PREVIEW of an exploit in the system menu that comex found that will let us run custom code on an UN MODDED WII, which means we can basically set up homebrew on a wii without Twilight Princess, or even a dvd drive. It's just a channel on an SD card.

Currently it is just set up to load the HBC but more will come soon. All of the credit goes to comex for this, I just tested it and filmed the video.

301w ago - Craig from the Pandora Team has uploaded a video of Quake III running very, very well on the Pandora, which is an upcoming portable video gaming console built around Linux.

If this video doesn't show off what the console is capable of I don't know what will.

To quote, from the video's caption: "Demo with some bots running I guess, it appeared to me the average framerate was around 40.

This at 600 Mhz and 110 Mhz." Check it out below!

Video: StarCraft Running on the PS3 via Qemu & YDL with Guide!

302w ago - Using Yellow Dog Linux on the PlayStation 3, efaustus9 used Qemu to emulate Windows 95 on the platform, allowing him to run StarCraft. To quote:

Want to run windows apps on your PS3? Windows runs on about 90% of home computers, consequently most software and games are designed for that OS. Wine is a good option for running windows apps in linux.

However it requires a x86 CPU and thus will not run on the PPC processor found in the ps3. So how do you run windows apps on the ps3? Qemu is how. Qemu runs windows in virtualization. Not the most efficient way to run win apps but it works.

In this video I use Qemu to emulate the relatively resource light Windows 95 in yellow dog linux on the ps3. I also use the fscaler tool to utilize the cells spe's and enlarge the image with out taking a performance hit.

As you can see the classic starcraft is quite playable all from the comfort of my living room. Want to try the same on your PS3? Check out my [Register or Login to view links].

I will presume you already have YDL installed with a working internet connection. If you do not have either or both see my guide above....
