Video: Sportsfriends: Pass the Hokra - PSN Preview Arrives

50°
104w ago - Creator Ramiro Corbetta has introduced Sportsfriends: Hokra today complete with a PSN preview video for fans below.

To quote: I'm Ramiro Corbetta, creator of Hokra, one of the four games that make up Sportsfriends.

If you don't know about Sportsfriends, it's a compendium of four super fun local multiplayer games that's coming to PSN in 2013. Over the last couple of weeks, two of the other designers involved in Sportsfriends spoke about their games (you can read about Noah Sasso's BaraBariBall and about Bennett Foddy's Super Poler Riders), and today I get to write about my game.

Hokra is a minimalist sports game for two teams of two players. Players score points by holding the balls in the goals of their color on the corners of the screen. This video I did with Kotaku does a great job of explaining the basics of the game:

The rules are quite simple, but the game has a lot of depth to it. Even though I have played it for innumerable hours, I'm still finding new techniques and strategies when I play against expert competition.

When I started working on Hokra, I wasn't exactly making a game. I had been playing lots of FIFA, and like many other people, my favorite part of the game is...

Video: Sportsfriends: Building a Better Pole Riders for PS3

50°
106w ago - Foddy Founder and Head Honcho Bennett Foddy has shared a Sportsfriends: Super Pole Riders video today spotlighting the building of a better Pole Riders for the PlayStation 3 entertainment system.

To quote: In 2010, when I started making Pole Riders, my original plan was to make a straight pole-vaulting game, like the ones in Summer Games or Daley Thompson's Decathlon, both games that were super-popular when I was six years old. Back in 1984, local multiplayer games were nearing the peak of their popularity.

In the arcades, there were games like Joust and Track & Field, but at home, and in the public libraries, the Epyx compilations ruled the roost: not just Summer Games but Winter Games and the immortal California Games too. I was absolutely obsessed with the pole-vault event in Summer Games and for the longest time, I wanted to make my own version of it.

Perhaps it's no coincidence, then, that I'm now involved in Sportsfriends, which is a spiritual successor to Summer Games - a compilation of four sports-themed games, to be played by up to four friends on the one couch.

But unlike the old Epyx compilations, none of the Sportsfriends games play it straight. Hokra is a hockey game with no goals and no sticks. BaraBariBall is a volleyball game with no net, where the...

EA Sports Announces FIFA 13 Demo Hits PlayStation Network Today

50°
115w ago - EA Sports Community Manager Romily Broad has announced that the FIFA 13 demo officially hits PlayStation Network across Europe today!

Below are the details, to quote: Good morning football fans. Rom from [Register or Login to view links] here to let you know that a free FIFA 13 demo will be available across Europe later today.

You'll be able to play as Manchester City, Arsenal, Juventus, AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund, and experience EA Sports' Football Club Match Day - a new feature that we think will drive the deepest and most meaningful connection yet between a videogame and the real world of sport.

FIFA 13 and the football season will be completely connected for the world's top leagues. EA SPORTS Football Club Match Day will push real-world news ripped from the headlines around the world into FIFA 13.

In the demo, real-world drama such as injuries, suspensions, team form, and media gossip surrounding Manchester City, Arsenal, Juventus, AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund will play out in-game and be reflected through in-game commentary.

Player form, displayed in detail within the team management screens, will change regularly, so if a striker is in a scoring purple patch in real life, or a keeper is leaking goals, this will be reflected in their in-game...

Video: EA Sports Challenge Series Returns to PlayStation 3, Prizes

200°
116w ago - Sony Marketing Promotions Specialist Michael Steranka has shared some fresh video footage today announcing that the EA Sports Challenge Series is returning to the PlayStation 3 entertainment system.

To quote: Attention PlayStation Nation: we're back with the biggest gaming tournament of the year - the $1 Million EA Sports Challenge Series powered by Virgin Gaming!

Last year, we blew the doors off of the sports gaming scene and now we're giving you another chance to take home huge cash prizes for playing FIFA 13, Madden NFL 13 and NHL 13.

To get a taste of what last year's experience was like, check out this video recap from the 2012 tournament finals in New York.

Last year in NYC, we made legends out of Adam Winster (FIFA 12 Challenge Champion), Tyler Glen (Madden NFL 12 Challenge Champion) and John Grasso (NHL 12 Challenge Champion). These gamers took home life-changing prizes and will be defending their titles in 2013. Bring your best game and you could be crowned this year's champ.

So How Does it Work?

This year's tournament structure has been simplified, so even if you've never played in a video game tournament before it won't take you long to get into the action. In fact, it only takes six wins to secure your spot at the live tournament...
