Samus Comes to PS3, Courtesy of a new UT3 Mod!

100°
337w ago - Alcor43 has released a custom skin that players can load up on their PlayStation 3 to play as the star-studded Nintendo mascot. Now you can play as bounty hunter Samus Aran in Unreal Tournament III.

The model comes complete with an alternate armor set, maskless face, and gun arm.

Download: Samus Aran v1.0 USERDATA.JAM for PS3 [Right-click, Save As]

From the ReadMe file:

How to use this model:

- Put USERDATA.JAM on the root of a memory stick and plug it into your PS3.
- Load UT3, go in the Community screen, then under My Content do Import Content.
- Select the memory stick and follow the remaining on screen procedure.
- Go back to the title screen, Settings / Player / Customize Character.
- Samus is within the Ironguard faction.

Special Note:

The PS3 doesn't support custom family code as of v1.10. So the Samus model for PS3 is but a stripped down version of her PC counter part. There's no custom animations, physics, FPV hands nor gibs. As soon as a potential patch is released for PS3 that unlocks the family code, I'll release an updated and...

PS3 Hello World UT3 Mod Proof-Of-Concept released!

500°
337w ago - Yesterday we posted a rumor of a PS3 Hello World Homebrew Method found by dragula96. Many were skeptical as it was announced the day before April Fool's Day, however, today we are happy to confirm the only fools were those who dubbed it as "fake" :P

Courtesy of dragula96, here is the PS3 Hello World UT3 Mod Proof-Of-Concept along with related info and a new video detailing how it was done! Please NOTE (as suspected in the previous comments) this is a UT3 Mod and not true PS3 homebrew (running unsigned code), however, it is an excellent accomplishment in itself.

From the ReadMe file: ps3 hello world by dragula96 4.1.08

this is a proof of concept/hello world
this already works with firmware version 2.20
the idea is to use this method to try and code
games to play via the ps3.

WIP: Downgrade your PS3 version without previous dumps!

100°
340w ago - We announced this notice some time ago, now I would like to show you a picture of the tool I compiled to do the job. You need the Infectus mod-chip on your PS3 to downgrade. This mod-chip allows you to take a backup of your current PS3 Firmware that can be restored.

The news is that before it wasn't possible to downgrade without a previous dump of your own PS3 console's Firmware, but now things have changed.

Using this tool you can modify a NAND backup in order to let the console think it has a lower Firmware version, so later you can use an official Sony upgrade PUP file to "downgrade" to the version you need.

It has been tested to patch all PS3 Firmware dumps up to 2.10 so far, but is a work-in-progress as we still need to test re-updating more thoroughly.

I would like to thanks to Gigi and Mainman for their support in this tool, and all the other PS3News Devs for helping us in all our work.

PS3 Six USB Port Mod video out!

250°
342w ago - Not long ago we all saw the PS3 Rear USB Port Mod Video, and today MacSolidWorks is back with his latest creation- a (6) USB Port Mod (4 front and 2 rear) for PS3!

To quote: My PS3 now boasts six (6) fully functional USB ports, the original four in front, and two (2) in the rear. We used the facilities of Dominion Lasercom's R&D lab for our work location as this is a seriously complex (and frightening) mod.

Since their are no schematics or plans anywhere on the net to do this, we had a-lot of head scratching and hurdles to deal with, but in the end it worked out very well as you can see.

Basically what we've done is cut the data path from the internal USB controller chip on the PS3 to the #4 USB port (the one closest to the center).

We then wired the upstream connection on the "external" hub to the PS3's data output on those traces, thus tricking the PS3 into thinking there's a regular four port hub plugged into the front.

After that, we wired a downstream cable from the "external" hub back to the PS3's front USB port.

To activate the two rear USB ports we simply ran 2 pairs of data lines from the "external" hub.

All power to and from the...

PS3 rear USB port mod unveiled!

250°
343w ago - MacSolidWorks undertook the painful process of modifying his PS3 in order to provide it with a rear USB mod for use with the Playstation Eye.

After searching high and low for instructions, he decided to just go ahead and perform the mod himself as shown in the video below.

To quote: I modified my PS3 to have a rear USB port for my Playstation EYE. I looked all over the web for instructions on how to do this but couldn't find anything. So I just did it myself.

Here are the results:

1. It works.

2. As long as you don't plug anything into the front USB port you've "borrowed" for the rear port, everything is fine.

3. If you plug something into the "borrowed" port, both peripherals stop working and you'll need to restart the PS3.

4. This setup cannot act like a true USB hub as it's just a pass-thru for one of the front ports.

Since this setup is not optimal and I'd like at least 2 USB ports on the back of my PS3, I'm currently working on a new mod that will allow a true hub on the back eliminating the aforementioned limitations.
