Rumor: PS2 Software Emulator Coming to Sony's PlayStation 3

297w ago - To compliment an [Register or Login to view links] from earlier today, a member of NeoGAF known as mephesta [Register or Login to view links] he was told by a Sony rep that they may be eventually be putting out a PS2 emulator for the PlayStation 3 console.

Apparently, as the PS2 has about one year left on its life cycle, we shouldn't expect Sony to develop anything new with regards to backwards compatibility.. and they will just go out and get a PS2 emulator to put in future consoles.

To quote: The rumor comes from NeoGAF member Meph who recounts what was told to him by a Sony representative (openly described as a 'tool'). The story goes that Sony might be willing to buy a PlayStation 2 emulator for the future.

"He mentioned that since the PS2 has just 1 year left on its life-cycle not to expect them to develop anything new with regards to backwards compatibility," says Meph.

"He then leans in and lowers his voice, as if to tell me some deep dark secret and mentions that Sony may be willing to potentially buy a PS2 emulator to put in future consoles."

PS2 Controller Causes Two Brothers to Choke & Stab One Another

299w ago - Two brothers living in Waukesha [Register or Login to view links] choked, cut and stabbed each other when they fought over a PlayStation 2 video game controller.

Waukesha Police are recommending that charges be brought against both brothers who violently acted out of anger.

Video games can sometimes bring friends and family together, this on the other hand also killed these family members. This all took place on Sunday at a home on Whiterock Avenue where the two brothers got into a huge argument over whose turn it was to play the video game. The fighting went from simple yelling to one of the brothers choking the other.

In defense the brother who was being choked, pulled out a knife and cut the hands of the instigator, after which the who was doing all the choking took the knife and stabbed his brother and then fled the scene.

The brother who fled then walked to the hospital and suffered from severely frostbitten fingers. It looks like this violent guy wont be playing video games for quite a while. Police report that none of the injuries sustained were life threatening.

PS2 Backwards Compatibility Comes to PlayStation 3 via SingStar

500°
300w ago - The fact that a lot of PS3 owners own PS3s that can't play PS2 games sucks. Stupid move on Sony's part. But if the only PS2 game you wanted to play was Singstar, read on!

First mentioned earlier this year, Sony Europe have announced that the title update allowing SingStar PS3 users to "hot swap" their PS2 SingStar discs is ready for download.

In other words, even if you own a PS3 that doesn't support backwards-compatibility, you'll be able to use your PS2 SingStars on your PS3 provided you boot up the PS3 version first.

Great for PS2 owners with a big SingStar library looking to upgrade to a PS3, but what about the rest of us? We're intrigued by this patch.

If Sony can come up with a patch that lets one PS2 game run (even in a limited capacity) on a PS3 that doesn't otherwise support backwards compatibility, why can't the same be done for more PS2 games?
