New Era for Gaming: less graphics-intensive casual games

200°
334w ago - Those attending the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco this week may have noticed that a not-so-subtle revolution is going on in the world of computer games.

A "movement" is afoot–call it the casual game effect. This movement is being sparked by the Nintendo Wii and the fact that a plethora of low-cost games with minimal graphics are hitting the market.

In addition, cell phones are emerging as an important casual-game platform in the U.S. Put this all together and it's easy to see that the high-end 3D graphics-intensive game market is not necessarily at the center of the gaming world anymore.

Sure, Alienware and Voodoo PC still rule the high-end gaming PC market, and game console platforms, such as the Xbox 360 and the Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3), still dominate in the world of high-end gaming graphics. It's also true that this is still a lucrative market where big bucks are made. But from a larger gaming perspective, the shift to less graphics-intensive games is where the big numbers will come from in the future.

One of the biggest surprises in video gaming has been the strong demand for the Nintendo Wii. This Wii is the biggest-selling console in the game market, outselling the Xbox 360 and PS3 combined. Its easy-to-use wireless interactive user interface has...

335w ago - Google and Dell are on the point of launching a new mobile phone to run on the Android operating system, probably at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona that's going on at the moment. Dell have tried to enter the mobile phone market once before but their range of PDAs was a complete flop.

Well, would you buy a Dell phone? Exactly.

Dell have also recently acquired Alienware, the trendiest tech company in the world, an expert in Video, Gaming, and Audio, and a company crying out for a mobile phone.

So here are the first pictures of the Alienware mobile phone!

Classic Alienware eye catching design
Large screen with high resolution
Superb video gaming capability
Fantastic Audio
Built on the Google Android platform

It's well known that Dell want to enter the mobile phone market. Rivals such as Apple, Hewlett Packard and Asus already have mobile divisions, and last year Dell poached Motorola executive Ron Garriques to run their new global consumer group.

But so far their efforts have come unstuck, the uninspiring Axim PDA handset was dropped mid 2007, and Strategy Analytics Director Neil Mawson gave the following verdict "It makes sense for Dell to have a high-profile entry back into the market because its last effort with...

NVIDIA claims the APX 2500 is "the world's lowest power, high-definition computer on a chip," providing 10 hours of 720p HD playback and 100 hours of audio, the ability to decode, encode 720p video and support up to 12 megapixel camera sensors. It can ouput 720p video via HDMI and up to SXGA (1280x1024) for LCD/CRT support. As you'd expect, it can handle all types of movie, image and audio files and formats

The Metal Gear Saga Explained: MGS4 and More

50°
336w ago - Everybody - almost everybody - has been waiting, eagerly for the chance to start up their PS3s and boot up a round of MGS4. The series has been around for a while now, since 1987 for the original Metal Gear game, and the first PS version, Metal Gear Solid back in 1998 and the series come a long way since then.

So let's begin the basics of the game. I'll assume that most of you already know the central characters in the game, because otherwise why would you even be reading this? But if you don't and are still reading, please help yourself to Google or Wikipedia to understand what the hell I'm talking about.

The crux of the entire game lies in the Successor project introduced in Portable ops by character called "Gene" (who was created to become the perfect field commander). The Boss, Naked Snake (Big Boss), Gray Fox/Ninja/Frank Jaeger, Solid, Liquid and Solidus are all parts of this project initiated by the Philosophers and this legacy continues with the formation of the Patriots whom we get to a little later.

The Boss, along with a couple of others (Gene/the Cobra Unit) make up the origin of the Successor project initiated by the Philosophers. This is the starting point of all the events that ultimately culminate into MGS4 and beyond (Yes there is a beyond).Within Portable Ops, both...
