GDC 2008: Final Fantasy Updates

50°
336w ago - Taku Murata, General Manager of Square Enix's Research & Development division, just gave a presentation at this year's GDC titled "The Technology of Final Fantasy."

Most of the information given at the conference was more on the technical side of things, dealing with the company's various engines and experiences with actual development. However, towards the end of the show, we were treated to a few bits of information that should be interesting to Final Fantasy fans.

First, Square Enix's "White Engine," the companywide technology platform, has been renamed Crystal Tools (and is designed for use with the PS3, 360 and PC). Also, Murata mentioned that a scaled down version of Crystal Tools will be implemented for the Wii. Intriguing indeed. This technology is being implemented in the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

Soon after these details were given, an old trailer was promptly shown. It's been a while since we've seen a trailer from the upcoming Final Fantasy titles, but we'll break it down for you again.

The trailer was for Final Fantasy XIII, and began with the now recognizable shots of a cybernetic train snaking through highly science-fiction inspired environments. The following flashed quickly, but it looks like a monster, reminiscent of series...

PS3 Home BETA gets huge update next week

50°
336w ago - The update will bring the version number to 0.8.3 (taking us ever closer to its release at v1.0.0) and the information comes from the beta message board on the official PlayStation site, so we're certain it's legit.

Playstation Home BETA update version 0.8.3:

New user interface:

The UI has undergone a major change (our graphical artist calls the new interface "Home CS" [Home Chip System]) and it's not just there to look good; we also believe it improves the logical flow of your interactions.

Other UI changes include a new vector based font system that improves text clarity and improvements to a range of different icons (for example the loading icon under your character's feet now gives a sense of something happening).

Another nice addition is that people on your friends list in the virtual PSP are sorted by three different states: "Offline", "Online" and "Online in Home" - these are colour coded too.

The Virtual PSP has undergone considerable changes. We have changed the structure of the menus to try and make it easier and more logical to navigate. There are also new icons for all of the options and new backgrounds available to customise the look. In the past an option that was unavailable to you was simply invisible; but now the option will remain...

Resistance: FoM Network Update Vulnerability

100°
338w ago - As you know, the Resistance: Fall of Man game updates via PlayStation Network. The resident PS3 Devs (Subdub and Gigi) discovered this nearly 6 months ago and others (Placa, to name just one) soon after, it's just another rehash of the old Warhawk method (detailed here and here), but more constrained.

For example, using the Warhawk hole users could change directories, in the R:FOM one you can't. In layman's terms, it means this R:FOM method is even more limited/useless than the Warhawk one was. Of course to those who just recently discovered it- this is being incorrectly labeled as something useful when it sadly isn't at all.

However, since Sony plugged the Warhawk hole in a past Firmware Update, most of the devs opted to keep quiet until tonight... as now this hole will certainly be addressed in an upcoming Firmware Update as it is indeed a security issue to Sony.

It's a fairly simple method. Using your favorite DNS "hijack" method, or proxy server redirect download-prod.online.scea.com...
