Sony Confirms Licensed Bluetooth Headset for PS3

50°
318w ago - Internet reports purported of an official, licensed Bluetooth headset made specifically for the PlayStation 3 back in March. Turns out it's real, as Sony confirmed today that the headset in question will be packaged with the retail-exclusive Blu-ray version of SOCOM: Confrontation and also will be sold separately.

Unlike most standard run-of-the-mill Bluetooth headsets, this one in particular will feature a mute button. Additionally, it will ship with a handy USB powered charging dock.

The product is slowly exiting the prototype phase, so pricing details have yet to be finalized, but expect more information to come to light as Confrontation nears its scheduled mid-September release.

Insider reveals XMB Firmware v2.40 features, set for E3 launch

250°
318w ago - Update: Since the original story went live, further information regarding the inclusion of trophies in the 2.40 update became available. As expected full 2D trophy support will be in the XMB update and there will be four types: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

Platinum is only awarded when you have collected all other trophies in a game. Also there are no gamer points, it's all done via a levelling up system. Think Call of Duty 4 leveling up system, we reckon.

According to Future Publishing, an insider has dropped by to tell them that firmware v2.40 is set to launch in around three weeks time and has also revealed all the features.

The XMB features that you will be able to access in game include - friend category, messages, manage downloads, set vibration, sign in to PSN, register friends, bluetooth devices, music category, use system BGM, work system BGM operation panel, settings, assign controllers, view profiles, game category, set audio devices and use the voice channel. The update will allow you to play back custom tracks in-game from XMB music column although it's not sure if this is only compatible with new titles.

To quote: A quick look at the diary reveals that E3 is just under three weeks away. It doesn't take a genius to see that Sony's pre-E3 conference would...

Infosys: Holograms on handsets by 2010

50°
319w ago - Holographic mobile handsets capable of projecting, capturing, and sending 3D images have been developed by Indian tech giant Infosys.

By 2010, the devices will routinely beam 3D films, games, and virtual goods into our laps, according Infosys, which has patented the handset.

The portable machines will capture and send 3D snapshots of the surrounding world, helping accident investigators, teachers, and doctors work remotely by instantly relaying realistic depictions of car damage, injuries, medical scans, or educational aids.

The powerful onboard processor on the Infosys machine would build a series of 2D shots taken, for example, from a digital camera, into 3D holograms using algorithms called 'Fourier' transformations to calculate the extra third dimension.

The patent, granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, says this allows complex 3D holographic images to be squeezed through the narrow pipes of existing communications networks by sending only the unprocessed data to be translated into the 3D hologram at the other end.

Infosys' device will be able to both send and receive these 3D images, displaying them using a projector with a laser source and micro holographic optical elements lenses.

The global 3D screen market is forecast by the industry...
