Llamasoft: TxK Out Today: The History, Development and Gameplay

50°
28w ago - Llamasoft Founder Jeff Minter confirmed that TxK is out today on PS Vita, with details on the title's history, development and PlayStation Vita gameplay below.

To quote: TxK is the latest in a particular genre of arcade-style shooters which can be described as "neo-retro".

These games are characterised by gameplay inspired by arcade games of old, but take advantage of modern hardware to provide graphics and audio that far surpass anything that was possible back in ancient times.

Often they take as inspiration some aspect of an older display style and, through modern graphics hardware and techniques, seek to create an experience that is evocative of its ancestry but far nicer-looking.

You've all seen games like "[Register or Login to view links]", where the enemies and player characters are made of glowing lines.

These line-based displays go back to an old, obsolete yet beautiful display technology that was used in the arcades, called "vector graphics".

Back then it was not possible to generate pixel-based displays that had a high resolution, and as a result images in games tended to look blocky, as if made out of bricks. "Vector graphics" was a different way of driving a graphics display, causing...

No Heroes Allowed: No Puzzles Either is Coming Soon to PS Vita

50°
28w ago - Sony International Software Development Manager Tomoyo Kimura announced today that No Heroes Allowed: No Puzzles Either is coming soon to PS Vita.

To quote: Hi everyone! We are happy to announce that the No Heroes Allowed series is making its return in Spring 2014 as a free-to-play hunting puzzle game for PS Vita!

This is the fifth entry in the series, and we call it No Heroes Allowed: No Puzzles Either! Just as the name suggests, the humor (and 8 bit art) that the series is known for is back and better than ever.

Who said it was easy to be a bad guy?

As a "God of Destruction," you must use your evil power of destruction to defeat more than 200 quirky looking heroes in 64 levels of match-three puzzles. As you conquer levels and capture heroes, the heroes are banished to your dungeon, where they work for you to dig up valuable items in the mines that can be used as power ups during subsequent levels.

Also, don't forget to enter the "Badman's Lair" where you can use your evil genius to combine your choice of monsters, heroes and items already found through the game to create an even more powerful army.

Look out for more details soon, and stay evil!

Orangepixel Games Coming to PS Vita, Starting with Gunslugs

50°
29w ago - Orangepixel's Pascal Bestebroer announced today that their videogames are coming to PS Vita starting with Gunslugs.

Below are the details, to quote: I'm Pascal Bestebroer, the indie developer known as [Register or Login to view links].

I've been developing games since 2004, which have appeared on older mobile platforms like J2ME, as well as newer ones like Android and iOS. That said, it's likely you don't know Orangepixel... yet!

With the help of the guys at [Register or Login to view links], I hope to change that and make my games more known to new audiences, starting with PlayStation gamers. So, Gunslugs will be the first of the Orangepixel titles to hopefully land a spot on your PS Vita this month!

As I mentioned above, I've been creating games since 2004, and all the Orangepixel games have a few key elements in common:

First, they feel, look and sound "retro." This is a very commonly used term these days, but don't judge the games because they looks retro - I also try to imbue my games with newer tricks, gameplay concepts and even some triple-A ideas, bringing old-school style games to a more modern audience.

The final element that all Orangepixel games share, is that they are hard. Not brutal, and...

Video: Strategy Game Frozen Synapse Tactics Evolving on PS Vita

50°
29w ago - Below is a video from Double 11 Design Manager Gareth Wright on how acclaimed strategy game Frozen Synapse Tactics is evolving on PS Vita.

To quote: For those new to Frozen Synapse Tactics, it's an evolution of the acclaimed, turn-based, PC strategy game by Mode 7. Players control an elite strike team of futuristic soldiers, from shotgunners and snipers to grenadiers and machine-gunners.

Matches take place on procedurally generated, virtual environments, or players can create their own, choosing the amount of rooms, walls, windows, cover and so forth in the creation area. All battlegrounds are fully-destructible.

Players plot paths and issue orders for their units, aiming to predict their opponent's strategies or complete the match objectives. Both teams commit their plans for each turn, we call this 'Priming', and the outcome of that turn is then played out, resulting in awesome fire-fights, exploding walls and cinematic kill cams.

Our real design challenge for Vita was to figure out how we would engineer away from a complex menu driven PC experience to an intuitive design that still maintains the immediacy of the original game. Intuitive for us meant that it should appeal to a much wider audience but at its core should satisfy modern day die-hard tactical shooter fans.
