Video: Introducing Kodoku, New Survival Horror for PS4 and PS Vita

50°
26w ago - Carnivore Studio Founder Romain Toutain introduced a new survival horror videogame for PS4 and PS Vita platforms today alongside a video trailer below.

To quote: Hello! I'm Romain, founder of Carnivore Studio, an independent studio based in London.

You may have seen screenshots of Kodoku, the horror game we are currently working on for PS4 and PS Vita. If not, take a look at the images in this post.

For the uninitiated, here is a quick recap. The game is a horror and exploration game, set on a Japanese island. Instead of shooting guns at zombies, you will have to use strategy and stealth to survive all the Lovecraftian creatures - inspired by Japanese folklore - that live on the island.

You will also be able to use magic talismans you will learn to craft on the island, in order to find your best way to face enemies.

This game means a lot to us. We wanted an original art direction, a very specific mood and general feeling - decisions which, we think, will lead to a unique horror experience.

We grew up with horror games (most of us are huge fans of Siren series) and were fascinated by what we could do with all those legends and stories, so started building the game we wanted...

26w ago - FuturLab's Dave Gabriel confirmed today that Surge Deluxe electrifies PlayStation Vita on February 4th, 2014.

Below are the details, to quote: Hello all! Dave from FuturLab here. I'm excited to announce that Surge Deluxe will be released on February 4th, 2014, exclusively for PS Vita! Check out the electrically charged game play trailer here:

Surge Deluxe features lightning-fast match-three gameplay, and rewards those who can think strategically under pressure!

Since Surge was originally released on PS Mobile we've had a ton of feedback, and Surge Deluxe on PS Vita is our response to that feedback.

We've added unique shapes for each color block, so colorblind people can compete on an even playing field, and we've added depth to the scoring system with new special block types that reward quick thinking and understanding of the game mechanics.

Rumor: PS Vita Slim Set for Release in Europe and North America?

50°
27w ago - IGN reports that Sony has invited press to an exclusive breakfast briefing with PlayStation next Thursday, January 30th, where it is rumored that they will unveil a PS Vita Slim (or perhaps a PS Vita TV international release) for Europe and North American regions.

The invitation (below) reads, to quote: "You are invited to an exclusive breakfast briefing with PlayStation.

Following the biggest launch in PlayStation history, join us for an introduction to the slimmest.

When: Thursday 30th January 2014 | 09:00-11:00"

The PS Vita Slim is already available in Japan, and is 20 percent thinner than the existing model, as well as being 15 percent lighter.

It does away with the OLED screen for a 5-inch LCD display, which helps the battery to supposedly last up to an hour longer. The Japanese one is available in six different colors too, though we've yet to see if that's replicated in the west.

Of course the announcement could be about something else entirely, but the Vita Slim seems to be the sensible option, especially given the new appeal the handheld has thanks to the PS4's remote play functionality.

Having only just launched the PS4, it's exceedingly unlikely that Sony would announced a slim version of the console right now as they traditionally...

Artist's Perspective: The Main Character of Road Not Taken

50°
27w ago - Spry Fox Lead Artist Brent Kobayashi shared his perspective of the main character of Road Not Taken on PS Vita and PS4 below.

To quote: Hi everyone! I'm Brent, the lead artist for Spry Fox's upcoming PS4 & Vita game, Road Not Taken. We've gotten a lot of questions and compliments about the look of the game's main character, so I thought you might enjoy reading about the process I went through in creating it!

First, I guess I should say that designing a game's main character/avatar is always tricky. The avatar has to work as a functional asset within the context of the game, has to look good in marketing materials and screenshots, but most importantly, has to feel right as something that represents you, the player! Easier said than done.

In Road Not Taken, the main character is a forest ranger of sorts (who happens to be blessed with mystical powers of levitation). Although the theme of the game superficially calls for it, I knew right off the bat that I didn't want to go with a typical "park ranger" motif.

The forest of Road Not Taken is mysterious and enchanted, and I wanted the Avatar to have the same vibe. So instead, I drew inspiration from more delightful/whimsical figures. Some of my key inspirations include:

• I had the great pleasure and fortune of working...

Dumping Games from PS Vita Cartridges Now Possible by Katsu

400°
27w ago - Following up on the previous PS Vita Dual Firmware Boot PoC demo, today Sony PlayStation Vita hacker [Register or Login to view links] has made available details on dumping games from PS Vita cartridges.

Below are the details, as follows: Dumping games from PS Vita Cartridges is now possible! - The beginning of piracy?

After Yifan Lu’s great hardware reports about the PS Vita, its motherboard and its nand, our user Katsu found a way for dual booting the PS Vita, which can kind of be seen as a downgrade solution.

But that is not everything that he was able to do. Katsu is on fire and also looked at the Vita cartridges... see below for some more electronics joy!

PS Vita Cartridge dumps now Possible - Does this enable piracy?

Katsu seems to be able to dump a PS Vita cartridge - you know, those tiny physical modules that contain PS Vita games, a cartridge, like we know them from the Nintendo DS and 3DS - and is therefore able to retrieve the games in the format how they...
