Sixteen PlayStation 3 Consoles Help Solve Black Hole Mystery

200°
314w ago - Scientists at the University of Massachusetts and Alabama have solved a mystery about the speed at which black holes stop vibrating. What's interesting about this discovery is that it was solved exclusively on a 16-strong PS3 cluster.

To quote: Using only the computing power of 16 Sony PlayStation 3 gaming consoles, scientists at The University of Alabama in Huntsville and the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, have solved a mystery about the speed at which vibrating black holes stop vibrating.

It may be the first time this kind of research has been conducted exclusively on a PS3 cluster: A related 2007 UMass Dartmouth/UAHuntsville project using a smaller PS3 cluster also used a "traditional" supercomputer to run its simulations.

The biggest advantage of the console cluster – the PS3 Gravity Grid – at UMass Dartmouth was the cost saving, said Dr. Lior Burko, an assistant physics professor at UAHuntsville.

"If we had rented computing time from a supercomputer center it would have cost us about $5,000 to run our simulation one time. For this project we ran our simulation several dozens of times to test different parameters and circumstances, so you can see how much that would have cost us.

You can build a cluster like this for perhaps $6,000, and then...

Mythic & The Black Library Announce Dark Storm Gathering Novel

50°
318w ago - Mythic and The Black Library, a division of Games Workshop, today announced Dark Storm Gathering, an original novel based on the critically acclaimed MMORPG, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (WAR).

The second in a series of novels based on the hit massively multiplayer online role-playing game, Dark Storm Gathering will be available in all major bookstores and on the Black Library website in Spring 2009.

Dark Storm Gathering, by noted Black Library author Chris Wraight, provides a colorful and gripping account of the Realm vs. Realm battles that rage throughout WAR. In the novel, human and Elf adventurers are forced to form an uneasy alliance with the armies of the Empire to repel the forces of Chaos. Across the lands, the grim march of Tchar'zanek, dread Champion of the fell powers of Chaos, is underway.

Throughout the Empire of Man, the toll from plague and mutation continues to grow, and hope begins to fade. Only the intervention of the High Elves offers respite, but they are beset by foes of their own, the murderous Dark Elves.

When the prospect of treachery behind Imperial lines looms, four heroes based on careers in the game - Archmage, White Lion, Witch Hunter and Knight of the Blazing Sun - must work together to uncover the corruption before all is lost.

Sony PlayStation 3 Firmware 2.50: Black And White Video Problem

200°
323w ago - The latest Sony PS3 Firmware 2.50 update added many great features to all of our Playstation 3's, but we are also getting many reports of problems as well. The main problem with the latest update seems to be related to the DivX VOD addition.

Some users have video displaying in black and white, although it worked fine before updating. You can read some of the problems users have reported below, feel free to share a comment once reading.

If you have video on your HD don't get if you have an SD TV unless you like black and white, I found out the hard way.

I downloaded 2.50 yesterday, I also have same problem with my videos showing only in black and white plus small difference in sound. I really hope that Sony fixes this bug fast, because this is not what I paid for. Also I'm very disappointed over the freezing of GTA IV still not fixed.

It's completely stopped my current DivX movies from working correctly! (Black and white, funny lines at the top of my screen) I didn't pay R6000 for this. What gives?

About 100gb of films I have are now black and white... not Alfred...

Rumor: Samsung Blu-Ray Player to Hit $149 on Black Friday

50°
324w ago - Reports indicate that the Samsung BP-1500 Blu-ray player, which usually sells for $400, will go on sale on Black Friday for just $149.

To quote: You might want to hold off on buying a Blu-ray player for a few weeks, because thankfully, finally, seriously, and almost too-latedly, Blu-ray players will soon drop into truly affordable territory.

A source close to Ultimate Electronics has told us to expect the Samsung BD-P1500 – usually about $400 – for $149 on this particularly welcome and poignant Black Friday.

Ultimate Electronics is a primarily Midwestern chain, but look to be offering this deal in cooperation with Samsung – in other words, it's probably not the only place you'll see stupidly cheap Blu-ray players come November 28th.
