BioShock 2 in 2009?

359w ago - Following its extremely positive reception, BioShock is being eyed as a major new franchise by 2K Games parent Take-Two - which is already talking sequels.

The publisher's recently spoke of the possibility of hitting "roughly" a new BioShock release every two years.

"I would say, probably, roughly an every-two-year schedule would be optimal. And if you look historically, that has been largely the case with GTA, and I'd expect we'd apply roughly the same strategy to BioShock because BioShock is shaping up to be a very important franchise," Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick said in a conference call with analysts.
 

PS3 Stranglehold demo out on PS Store!

359w ago - All things being well in the world of the PlayStation Store, you should now be able to download a demo of the PS3 version of Midway's Woo-'em-up Stranglehold.

In Stranglehold, in case you didn't know, you step into the shoes of Chow Yun-Fat as Inspector Tequila and shoot shit up while doing lots of slow-mo diving. And shooting. And diving. And shooting.

Midway says the demo "will allow players to get a taste of the intense, non-stop action, cinematic gunplay and massively destructible environments that their itchy trigger fingers have been waiting for."
 

Preview: NBA 08 for PS3

359w ago - Amare Stoudemire, who will appear on the cover of the upcoming NBA 08, was at SCEA's San Diego headquarters on Sept. 7 to do some motion-capture work and take an early look at the new game.

After trading his bright-yellow Beatles t-shirt for a "dotted-up" mo-cap suit, Stoudemire took to the court and started firing free-throw line jump shots. The first few clanged hard off the rim, which Stoudemire attributed to the 10 a.m. start time. He eventually found his form, saying "Uh-oh" as he reeled off a few swishes in a row and warned that all Lakers fans should leave the room.

The Sony people told Stoudemire to pick one signature dunk, and he agonized over the choice, staring at the rim and rubbing his chin before deciding to go with a two-handed reverse. Later, he asked to give it another try, even asking if the rim could be lowered to eight feet to give the dunk extra power. After a couple big windmills, he was satisfied.

Later, Stoudemire sat down to give the game a try, leading his own Phoenix Suns against one of the game's designers, controlling the Seattle Sonics. He got into it, shouting, "There you go 'Trix! The Matrix!" after he guided Shawn Marion down the lane for a dunk, and, "Oh! Steve with the putback!" following a rare offensive rebound by Steve Nash. Virtual Amare scored...
 

Eternal Sonata, Beautiful Katamari Multiplatform?

Possibility 2: A sneak preview of what's coming up at next week's Tokyo Game Show.
Possibility 3: Some combination of the two.

Either way, Namco Bandai's website was suddenly and mysteriously full of surprises (the listings have since changed, as we doubt this announcement was meant for today), as a pair of previously Xbox 360-exclusive titles appears to have up and gone multiplatform.

First up, it's wacky fever-dream RPG Eternal Sonata which will now apparently be recreating the life and death (mostly death) of classical music composer Frederic Chopin on both the PS3 and the Xbox 360. That's gotta be good news for all those Sony old guardsmen who have been staunchly holding out for some JRPG action on their next-gen black boxes.

Next is Beautiful Katamari which is now currently being listed as both a PS3, Xbox 360 and a Wii title (of all things!). Waggle-based rolling would certainly be an interesting change to the Katamari program. Interestingly, the description makes no specific mention of the Wii version being exempt from any online multiplayer functionality -- guess we'll just have to wait and see official word on that.

Release dates for these new versions are all currently listed as "to be determined" so prepare for a bit of...
 

Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 for PS3 reviewed!

359w ago - The new gear introduced in GRAW 2 is still pretty freakin' sweet. The UAV Cypher, for example, gives you an eye in the sky to scout ahead for enemies. The MULE is a mobile, automated weapon shop; it can be used in a pinch to run down any bad guys foolish enough to stand around out in the open. And the Gun-cam lets you take a bead on enemies without stepping out from behind cover.

And all that spiffy recon gear is put to good use, because GRAW 2 liberally mixes strategy and action, balancing the two more adroitly than in any other tactical shooter I've played to date. In some levels, you'll go in guns blazing; in others, you'll creep from cover to cover and pray you're not seen. Sometimes you'll be alone, other times you'll make heavy use of your three-man squad, and sometimes you'll end up with additional support as the mission moves forward. The game constantly mixes things up, and in the process manages to neatly avoid the most common frustration of tactical shooters: figuring out how you're supposed to be playing the level.

See, most tactical shooters I've played have a specific path in mind for the player; you need to take out this guy first, then move to that cover, and take out that vehicle with this weapon -- and if you don't do everything right, and in order, the mission becomes vastly more difficult,...
