Nucleus Review for PS3

50°
361w ago - Every six seconds, a new dual-stick shooter in the vein of Robotron is released on a console download service. At least, that's what it feels like these days. While every one of these games has its own spin on the genre, few go as bananas as Nucleus. Nucleus is like some weird combination of Robotron and the movie Fantastic Voyage. You control a "remote unit," a sperm-looking robot...thing that fights viruses and nuclei inside some sort of living organism. Along the way, you blast away at, drag around, and push various cells for a variety of purposes, from blocking enemy shots to collecting power-ups for your special weapon. It all sounds kind of interesting, but in execution, it's actually quite dull.

The problems begin with your remote unit, which is about as speedy as a snail with a brick taped to its back. You can dart forward for a quick moment, or "squirt" as the game refers to it. Squirting, however, still feels a bit sluggish, and you basically have to hammer on the button several times to get anywhere quickly.

After you realize you're in control of a sperm that couldn't make it to the urethral tract without stopping for a breather, you'll discover that combat isn't much better. You start out with a rather piddly default shooter (that eventually upgrades into more powerful weaponry), which, like...

Source: Sony unveiling cheaper 40GB PS3 this week

361w ago - A new report confirms earlier rumors that Sony will announce a $399 40GB PS3 as early as this week. According to Sky News, a manufacturing source has revealed that Taiwanese FoxConn (which also produces PS2s) will make the rumored $399 PS3. An announcement could come sometime this week in an effort to "spoil" the high profile launch of Halo 3 for Xbox 360 says Sky.

Previous reports speculated that Sony would drop the price of the 80GB PS3 to match the current price ($499) of the now discontinued 60GB PS3. In order to offer a $399 PS3, Sky News reports that Sony will either remove the console's USB ports or backwards compatibility.

Sony denied comment on the report when contacted by GamePro.

361w ago - Electronic Arts has announced that its Redwood Shores development studio is working on new IP for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360--and this time, it's moving into the sci-fi horror genre. Expected to ship in the third quarter of 2008, Dead Space is a third-person survival horror game set in deep space. EA's announcement promises that the game will "deliver the ultimate in psychological thrills and gruesome action."

Players will control Isaac Clark, an engineer who sets off on what is supposed to be a routine mission to do repairs onboard a mining ship in deep space. Perhaps not unexpectedly, the trip turns out to be anything but routine when he discovers that an alien infestation has killed off the ship's crew, and he is left to fight for his life within the silence and darkness of deep space.

Executive producer Glen Schofield commented, "We are all such huge fans of the horror and sci-fi genres; we wanted to create the most terrifying game we could and keep the player on the edge of his seat the entire time."

Dead Space is being developed by EA's team at its Redwood City headquarters. The development team has previously worked on franchises, such as The Sims, The Godfather, and The Simpsons Game.
