Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

50°
363w ago - The Star Wars video game saga continues with Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, which casts players as Darth Vader's secret apprentice and unveils an expansive story about the era between Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope. Players will help Darth Vader in his quest to eliminate the Jedi from the universe and possibly change the course of history.

The Force Unleashed takes full advantage of newly developed technologies that create gameplay perfect for the next-generation consoles, like characters moving, acting, and thinking like actual human beings, adapting their behavior to the given setting

Is PS3 Programming Really More Difficult?

200°
363w ago - This question has come up in GamePro and also on the new Sony (US) PS3 blog. According to Sony programming the PS3 can be more complex than the 360 but this is due to the Cell having more capabilities. This (sort of) matches what is said in the article and does seem to be a more general consensus.

But is it really true? You do have to put in more effort to get the power out of the Cell processor, there's no doubt about that. I don't think it's necessarily "difficult", contrary to what you might read, very few people who have programmed Cell have ever actually said that, they do say it's more involved though.

Being a chip geek I've looked over the 360's processor and my own thinking is that getting something up and running on it will be easier than getting it running on Cell. The 3 XCPU cores are the same and are programmed in much the same way as a traditional PC processor.

Cell is of course different, the PPE is similar to existing processors (actually, it's based on the same core as the XCPU). The SPEs however are different and are not programmed in quite the same way, programmatically the big difference is the local store, you have to explicitly move data in and out of it. On a normal CPU this is invisible as the cache handles this for you.

However you don't want to just...

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue demo, free download Oct. 24th

100°
364w ago - Big news from the world of Gran Turismo. With the Tokyo Motor Show only a week away, Sony is already prepping for a huge unveiling on October 24th. There are rumors around what Sony could possibly be revealing, but for now the more important news at hand is the fact that GT5 Prologue will be a downloadable demo as of October 20th. That's right, a free download. That explains why Gran Turismo HD was removed from the PlayStation store on September 30th.

Chances are that this is the same demo shown at Tokyo Game Show (TGS). Most of you who didn't attent TGS will be able to see calendar and other functions in the new Prologue. If that's the case and the Prologue demo is the same one shown at the video game show last month, this upcoming download should feature Alfa Romeos, Nissans, Ferarris and other vehicles, a total of 16, as well as three tracks, Suzuka, Fuji and Daytona.

The October 24th downloadable demo of Prologue should hold fans over long enough until the December 13th release of Gran Turismo Prologue. Pricing will be set at 4,980 Yen for the Blu-Ray disc and 4,500 as a straight download. If it's only four bucks, give us the disc; we don't want a download that costs as much as a full game.

PSMania: Dark Cloud 3 Coming Exclusively for PS3?

50°
364w ago - In the latest magazine scan for PSMania, an Italian PlayStation magazine, their rumor mill reveals some interesting things, where you see the Dark Cloud 2 image, it states:

"Uno dei nostri infiltrati, ci ha rivelato che Level 5 sta lavorando a un nuovo Dark Cloud esclusivamente per la PlayStation 3. Questo titolo uscira il Marzo 2009, e sara sviluppato usando una nuova tecnologia stile cel-shading chimata "Kumo Engine"."

Luckily, I was able to get a translation:

"One of our infiltrates, has revealed that Level 5 is working on a new Dark Cloud exclusively for the PlayStation 3. This title will come out in March of 2009, and will be developed using a new open-technology, the Japanese style "Kumo Engine"."

Will Dark Cloud 3 arrive in 2009 for PLAYSTATION 3? If we hear an official announcement, we will let you know.

Unreal Tournament 3 Multiplayer Hands-On

50°
364w ago - Unreal Tournament 3 represents a departure of sorts from its predecessors. While the early UTs were billed as sort of the blood sport of the future, Unreal Tournament 3 will usher in a single-player campaign about an intergalactic war and featuring characters that look like they were from the casting call for Gears of War, another Epic game. But while Gears of War is a very tactical game about using cover, Unreal Tournament 3, just like its predecessors, is about lightning-fast run-and-gun gameplay where you'll do a lot of killing and dying, but you're always able to respawn within seconds to continue the fight.

Though Unreal Tournament 3 will have a single-player story, the game is still built around the idea of intense multiplayer battles, either against computer-controlled bots or other players online. (While the PC supports up to 32 players, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions will support up to 16.) There will be a number of modes in the game, ranging from simple deathmatch to team-based games such as capture the flag, vehicle capture the flag, and warfare. Deathmatch is pretty self-explanatory--it's every player for him or herself in the race to rack up kills--so we'll dive into CTF, VCTF, and warfare.

Capture the flag is a familiar mode in most games. Each team has a flag that it has to defend...
