- Sony Computer Entertainment sends word that partly thanks to the PlayStation 3, Folding@home - Stanford University's distributed computing project - has reached a petaflop - a milestone never before reached on a distributed computing network.
A petaflop, in case you don't keep a mathematical dictionary beside your desk, is the ability of a computer to do one quadrillion floating point operations per second (FLOPS). In other words, says SCE, "if every person on the planet were to perform a simple mathematical calculation, such as calculating a percentage, each person would have to perform 75,000 calculations every second for the world's population to achieve a petaflop." We said "whoa".
By achieving a petaflop, Sony says that scientists with the Folding@home program are now able to conduct research that typically would not be possible for 10 years down the line, such as greater progress in studies of protein folding and its link to diseases such as Alzheimer's.
"The recent inclusion of PS3 as part of the Folding@home program has afforded our research group with computing power that goes far beyond what we initially hoped," said Vijay Pande, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University. - MotorStorm developer Evolution Studios has been acquired by Sony Computer Entertainment, along with Evolution's Bigbig Studios subsidiary, which is responsible for the Pursuit Force series. Both studios will be incorporated with SCE's Worldwide Studios, with Evolution's Managing Director Mick Hocking appointed Group Studio Director for all three studios.
"Our strategy is to create the best games by working with the best talent and Evolution and Bigbig are world-class additions to our team," said Phil Harrison, president of SCE Worldwide Studios. "The incredible people in these studios further extend the depth and skill of the industry's largest platform-exclusive development resource."
Along with news of the acquisition, Sony announced that Evolution Studios is currently at work on a follow-up to MotorStorm, with an expected Blu-ray release in 2008. Evolution Studios is also prepping additional downloadable content for the original MotorStorm, while Bigbig is putting the finishing touches on Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice, which is expected to launch for the PSP this holiday season (though GameStop currently lists a January release). A PlayStation 2 iteration of Extreme Justice should follow early next year.
- One of the more unique games that we got to play for the first time at this year's Tokyo Game Show was Echochrome, the PSN puzzler that uses optical illusions as its gameplay foundation. Making use of really simple visuals -- black outlines on a white background, or vice versa -- the game has you rotating the environment in order to see your character progress through various optical challenges. See a gap between two ledges? Rotate the screen so that a column obstructs your view -- now that gap is gone.
The first thing the game teaches you are its five basic laws.
1. Subjective Translation: Changing your perspective can connect paths.
2. Subjective Landing: If an object looks to be below you, your character can land on it.
3. Subjective Existence: If you can't see a gap because it's obstructed, a path exists.
4. Subjective Absence: If you obstruct a hole from your vision, it no longer exists.
5. Subjective Jump: By rotating your perspective you can jump to new areas.
Using these laws, you're then tasked with making it through an example stage that presents a challenge for each one. You control a white faceless dummy that's supposed to follow a black one. The dummies walk on their own -- your only interaction with them is by manipulating the environment.
