DivX On The PS3: Is Sony Selling Consoles or Sabotaging HD-DVD?

50°
376w ago - When I found out that DivX was going to be supported on the PS3, I was pretty much floored by the announcement. I can see lots of reasons why Microsoft would want to add DivX to the Xbox, but with Sony's studio assets, I never expected them to embrace the format.
While there is no way for me to know what really motivated Sony, I do have my suspicions.

On a basic level, Sony obviously adopted DivX as a competitive strategy for the console market. Announcing support for a popular codec among hardcore gamers, makes a lot of sense, especially going into the holiday season. Whether or not Microsoft ends up adding DivX to the Xbox 360, Sony's support for DivX will certainly provide a boost for the console.

On the surface, this explanation seems to make a lot of sense, but the tin-foil hat part of me, can't help but wonder, if this really had more to do with Blu-Ray.

The current state of the HDTV DVD market is a mess. The Blu-Ray and HD-DVD camps seem to have settled for a stalemate and consumers are getting shafted in the process. By choosing a side in this battle, consumers risk ending up with obsolete technology, but that isn't the greatest obstacle to adoption. The real reason why consumers are sticking with the standard DVD, is because they can't get all of their content on either...

PS3 Theme Previewer out now!

50°
376w ago - To quote from polishpride212: With the feature of themes just being added, there are a lot of themes on the Internet, some good some not so good. So I was bored so I made this file that reads all the pngs and forms them into what looks like the PS3's XMB via Web browser.

There is a readme file in there but all you have to do is drop the html file and the spacefill.png into the sample>01 folder, launch your Web browser, and take a photo of the screen, and you will give everyone a preview of your theme with most of the icons, easily.

Here is the file. Please read the readme since there are a few limitations. This is what the preview looks like. I know it is not perfect, but I have only been working on it for about an hour.

K-Mart shoppers take 20% off PS3 hardware

50°
376w ago - Select K-Mart stores this week began to honor a 20 percent off coupon for Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 hardware at brick and mortar locations.

Members of deal website Fatwallet.com this week confirmed that the coupon could apply to the latest Playstation hardware to provide a substantial discount to either the 40GB or 80GB SKU.

The coupon is a valid for one week between Nov. 11 and Nov. 17 on one item in the store.

The 40GB PS3, which features built-in Wi-Fi and a copy of Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray disc, typically retails for $399. The 80GB version, which features limited backwards compatibility, is sold for $499.

Sony released the 40GB PS3 this month to spur sales at U.S. retail. The $399 option is the lowest-priced SKU to date and will likely attract buyers to the hardware and Blu-ray disc technology this holiday.

Sony last month said that losses caused by the PS3 game console may near $1 billion, an increase from a prior estimate of $876 million.

The company in Oct. recorded a 96.7 billion yen loss in the game division that was offset by a quarterly profit from strong electronics sales.

40GB PS3 sells 50,000 in first day in Japan

50°
377w ago - Sales of Sony's PS3 video games console surged 300 per cent after the company released a cheaper model in Japan last week, according to leaked survey data.

Sony Japan introduced the new PS3 model with a 40GB hard disk drive on November 11. One day later, local PS3 weekly sales figures had soared from an average of 16,000 to almost 66,000.

The figures are contained in preliminary data from the latest edition of a regular survey by Japan-based video games publisher and market survey firm, Enterbrain.

The substantial surge in weekly sales comes despite the release of the console occurring on the last day of the week. It is unclear what proportion of the sales resulted from pre-orders.

PS3 takes top spot
The huge increase in sales enabled the PS3 to take the top spot in full-sized console sales from Nintendo's Wii console for the first time. The Wii typically sells less than 35,000 per week in Japan, although sales have risen to 37,500 following the release of the popular game, Super Mario Galaxy.

The 40GB unit retails for $100 less than older models. The new console also lacks some features, including a flash memory device reader, two of the original four USB ports, and backwards compatibility with PS2 games. The Japanese version of the 40GB PS3 features a new 'Ceramic...
