Haze given December 14 release

50°
371w ago - Ubisoft offers up an updated release calendar, confirming Free Radical's FPS for release just in time for Xmas.

Today Ubisoft has announced that the PlayStation 3 exclusive first-person shooter Haze will be released in the UK on December 14. This gives the game just enough time to be snapped up by game-hungry PlayStation 3 owners before the Christmas festivities begin.

The news will be music to PS3 owners' ears, with rumors persisting that the game could well slip until 2008.

Free Radical's FPS will have some competition though, most notably from Activision's Call of Duty 4. Haze has plenty of tricks up its sleeve though, with four-player online co-op throughout the entire campaign, matching the achievement of Halo 3.

Look out for a review at around the time of release and for more information head over to the Haze game page.

Warhawk: Take Two

371w ago - No, not Take Two Interactive, but Warhawk.

Months ago, we were able to replace files on the PS3 HDD using the Warhawk Beta PKG, and some interesting network trickery, by hijacking the update procedure. Within the past week, we came across some more update files, these were interesting.

They were "fake SELF's". Basically SELF's, without the encryption. These are used (and runnable) on DEV boxes, but not on retail machines.

Whats so good you might wonder?

This gives many people a real first peek at PS3 executables, as this is the first without any encryption all over it. Sure, some people have been privileged to have seen and used Development compiled stuff, but nothing that was an actual game.

Now, this file has a ton of information. Aside from the fun strings, there are system calls to the hypervisor many have never seen before, information on how Warhawk communicates with its online server, information about filepaths in the PS3, and the actual code itself. Another tidbit, the file disappeared off the update servers yesterday. I wonder if someone realized their mistake.

I will leave you with the picture. Take note the highlighted string. Every...

Sony's Massive Advantage: PS3 Processing Power

50°
371w ago - If you look at the central processor in Microsoft's (MSFT) Xbox 360 you will see something that can trace its ancestry right back to the Intel 8086 of 1978.

Over its evolution this has forced endless fudges and compromises. An analogy might be trying to build a working supertanker on the plans of a model rowing boat. And the 360 itself owes its architecture to the IBM PC of 1981 and so carries with it the accommodations that this architecture imposes. These factors, ultimately, must impinge on the working of the console.

Compare that to Sony (SNE), who were able to design the processor and the console it is in with a clean sheet of paper. The Cell processor, designed jointly with IBM and Toshiba at a cost of $400 million is the state of the art in processor dessign. It is scalable, highly flexible and excellent at distributed processing.

So it is little surprise that the PS3 now holds the Guiness world record for the most powerful distributed computing network. Or that an astrophysicist has replaced a supercomputer with eight PS3s. This is one very special and very powerful machine and when game programmers eventually work out how to get the best from it we are going to see some spectacular results.

But there has been a price to pay. Whilst the 360 was cheap to develop and cheap...

Konami refuses to comment on PES 2008 patch rumor

371w ago - Internet rumour suggests patch will be out on November 19.

Konami has issued a "no comment" to rumours it has set a November 19 deadline for a PES 2008 patch.

Internet rumours surfaced today suggesting that the Japanese publisher was expecting to make a patch that would resolve the online lag issues available in just a week.

Comments purporting to come from a Konami spokesperson, reported by pesforum.co.uk, said: "We hope to have the patch released within two weeks at the latest, and have set a deadline of Monday 19th November to get this to the public, as we are aware there are a lot of gamers out there that are avoiding a massive part of the game because of the online issues."

The quotes continue: "I would say to all PES fans to be patient with us while we rectify the problems, please be assured that we are working very hard to fix these problems. We hope that everyone will soon be enjoying the online aspect of the game which people will love playing with their friends and fellow gamers."

However, when Pro-G contacted Konami for clarification the publisher told us that no official announcement on a PES 2008 patch had been made.

Many gamers have expressed their frustration at the crippling lag experienced when playing console versions of the game. Last...
