Colin McRae and son die in heli crash; father makes statement

344w ago - Racing legend Colin McRae, his son, and two family friends died in a helicopter crash on Saturday, September 15, when it went down near McRae's family home.

For those of you who don't know, McRae has worked closely with Codemasters on the popular Colin McRae racing series for several years now. The PS3 version of DiRT hit shelves last week.

The BBC reports: "Rally champion Colin McRae, his five-year-old son, a six-year-old boy and a family friend were killed in a helicopter crash, police believe. Strathclyde Police released the names of the four people they thought were on board the crashed aircraft on Saturday."

A statement from Colin McRae's father, Jim McRae has been released on behalf of the family: "It is with much sadness and regret that we have to make this statement.

It is unbelievable that Colin and Johnny's lives have been taken so prematurely and in such a tragic manner.

Colin was a great son, a loving husband to Alison and a fantastic father to Johnny and his big sister Hollie. Johnny was a great wee guy, spending every spare minute with his dad, and even at this early stage it looked like he had the potential to carry on the family dynasty.

Our thoughts are also very much with the families of Ben Porcelli and Graeme Duncan. Ben was a great...

PS3 allows in-game song playback from HDD and friend messaging

50°
344w ago - We! has confirmed that it is possible for the PS3 to play songs from the hard drive while a game is in play. This Spanish gamer was playing 'Everyday Together' on the PS3 (a Japanese downloadable PSN title) and he was trying to guess what each option did and stumbled across an option that asked him which tracked he wanted to play.

Moreover, the options were actually from there on in Spanish (his firmware language) which indicates that the player is integrated into the firmware and not options of the game as it is Japanese. Further to this, the player is quite advanced and it is clear Sony has been working on it as it has a number of options such as random playback, repeat a folder and related options.

But that is not all, this game allows you to send IN-GAME messages to your friends so you don't have to quit the game. It is also believed that this title is actually the first to take advantage of Remote Play with LAIR actually being the second.

Although it may be the first retail title to utilize XMB access, these functions have been in the PS3 early on as Sony leaves it to game developers to use them. Also, without the ability to change game files an exploit doesn't appear likely.

    WipEout HD teams revealed

    50°
344w ago - Sony's Studio Liverpool has revealed to GamesRadar the eight racing teams that will appear in WipEout HD when the game is released via the PlayStation Store later this year. They are:

  • FEISAR
  • Piranha
  • AG Systems
  • Triakis
  • Goteki 45
  • Assegai
  • EG-X
  • Qirex

With the exception of EG-X (which is new to the upcoming PSP title, WipEout Pulse), fans of the series will be familiar with all the featured teams. It's also highly likely that this roster will eventually increase in number through additional downloadable content.

As for which tracks will appear, so far we've seen WipEout Pure's Anulpha Pass and Chenghou Project. The developer is keeping the identity of the other six circuits a secret for now, although we do know that two will be taken from WipEout Pulse and the rest will be from WipEout Pure.

We recently had a hefty hands-on with WipEout HD at Sony's London HQ, so keep your peepers on GamesRadar for a full report on how the anti-grav racer's PS3 debut is shaping up and if it really is just a port. (Clue: No it's not)
