Deathwatch: Will the Sony Empire Fall in 2009?

50°
302w ago - We hesitated in adding a global manufacturer like Sony to Bitterwallet's Deathwatch list; it's all very well predicting the End of Days for Woolies and PC World, but not one of the best recognized brands on the planet, surely?

Until you look at some of the facts and figures haunting the Tokyo-based company right now:

* Sony have today announced plans to make 5% of its electronics workforce redundant - about 8,000 jobs
* From July to September, the Japanese economy shrank nearly five times faster than Government predictions
* Sony's profits fell by 90% in the last financial quarter, while warning that full-year profits would be down nearly 60% on the previous year
* The company's share prices has dropped from over $57 at the beginning of the year, to just $20 today

Of course there's a recession going on, so what do you expect? The number of job losses, as significant as it sounds, is small potatoes when compared to the 160,000 employed by Sony's electronics division. And the point of such drastic action is to help save Sony over £745 million and ensure the company can weather the financial storm long-term.

But not everyone agrees with the...

Yahoo: Top 20 Games for Fall 2008

50°
313w ago - Here are Yahoo's picks for the Top 20 games of fall, 2008:

Lego Batman
Platforms: PC, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP, DS
Genre: Action
Release Date: September 23

The caped crusader gets an angular makeover in Lego Batman. Protect Gotham as Batman and sidekick Robin from a rash of criminals, including nefarious villains like The Penguin, Two-Face, The Riddler and Mr. Freeze. Utilize a wealth of Bat-gadgets to survive over 30 levels in another comical Lego adventure.

Why It's Hot:
It's Lego. It's Batman. If you can't suss out why this is hot, we're not sure we can help you. Go sit in the corner and put on your Bat-dunce cap.

Why It's Not:
We stand by these Lego games because they are that very rare breed of video game that appeals equally to parents and kids. Still, they're all sort of the same game. If you've played Lego Star Wars and Lego Indy, don't expect a huge change in gameplay with the blocky Dark Knight.

Dead Space
Platforms: Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PC
Genre: Action
Release Date: October 14

In space, no one can hear you scream....but scream you will while playing EA's survival-horror game Dead Space. Set on a spaceship overrun with hostile alien beasties, this sci-fi frightfest is as cinematic...

Lumines Supernova coming to PSN this Fall

50°
316w ago - A brand new PS3-exclusive version of the popular Q Entertainment puzzle game is coming. The game is titled Lumines Supernova and will be an e-distributed game -- just like the Xbox Live version.

This PSN game will be pretty much the same deal as previous Lumines games, but with new stages and modes.

There are 40 skins to be unlocked in Challenge Mode, and there are a slew of news modes, including Dig Down Mode and Sequencer Mode.

Dig Down appears to be a Lumines-inspired version of Dig Dug, while Sequencer Mode allows players to create their own background music using various sounds and loops.

Rumor: Xbox 360's Fall Update Rolling Out Before September 7th?

50°
317w ago - Endsights writes: The rumor reads: "[The $199 SKU will feature] the traditional Arcade goodies (512MB memory card, etc.), the new Fall update pre-loaded as well as a motion controller and a few motion controlled mini games developed by Rare."

Aside from the motion-controller headline, the announcement of the Fall Dashboard Update (Xbox Experience) being pre-loaded on the system should raise some eyebrows.

If this rumor is true-that would mean that the new Xbox Experience would be hitting Xbox 360 consoles in the very near future; probably before September 7th rolls around.

Again, while this is speculation upon speculation, it is definitely something to look out for in the coming weeks.
