Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction Review

50°
353w ago - A lack of reasons for PS2 owners to upgrade to the more expensive PS3 is often said to be why Sony's latest console isn't performing as well as everyone predicted. Big name Sony franchises simply haven't been appearing on the PlayStation 3 as regularly as we all thought they would, with Sony focussing on new properties such as Resistance, Heavenly Sword and Motorstorm. Insomniac looks to be putting things right with its second PS3 exclusive, Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction. Should PS2 owners be thinking about trading in their aging console?

The first thing to hit you when you start the game is how good it looks. Every new console brings about the same old discussion over if game graphics will ever catch up with CG movies, and Tools of Destruction is perhaps the best example yet. It would be foolish to even suggest that the game is approaching Pixar quality visually, but the characters and game world are among the most visually impressive I've ever seen in a video game. Everything is curved, smooth and beautifully animated, giving the game the look of a CG movie, even if it isn't technically as impressive.

After ten minutes or so, when your real neck starts to ache from all the virtual looking around you've been doing (yes, there's a tonne of stuff flying around all the time) what really matters is...

The Showdown: Can Uncharted for the PS3 make a dent this November?

50°
353w ago - The Showdown continues. Each week we pick a topic, flip a coin to see which OT writer gets which side to debate, then present it to you. Today? Whether or not Uncharted: Drake's Fortune will help the PS3 this holiday season.

Frank: Ben and I spent some time last week sorting out just what we were going to do with November. There are so many good games coming out, and we can only do so many as full front-page reviews. While the slack will certainly be picked up here in Opposable Thumbs with what I can only predict will be a veritable cornucopia of mini-reviews through November and into December, Ben and I were very divided on which four of the big holiday titles would be getting timely front page reviews. The most controversial decision revolved around Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. I lobbied for the title for the front page as I feel that it will be one of the big holiday titles and a huge get for Sony, but Ben disagreed. So, we're here to battle it out. With the great guys at Naughty Dog working tirelessly to reinvent the aged Tomb Raider formula with contemporary design and top-notch production values, I firmly believe that Uncharted: Drake's Fortune will be one of the big titles of this holiday season, and will certainly surprise a lot of people.

Ben: Uncharted might be a great game, but a killer app?...

Ubisoft taunts with forthcoming Assassin's Creed surprise

50°
353w ago - "Document sans nom," the title reads in French. A single bloody feather falls onto a vacant white backdrop. The calligraphy reads "Nothing is true. Everything is permitted." Flashes of molecular diagrams fill the page momentarily. November 14, 2007. Be prepared.

These are the words left from the haunting email sent out by Ubisoft Montreal today. The email, picture below, contained a single bloody feather with almost no indication of what the forthcoming surprise is aside from "another" coming soon. I've been looking forward to Assassin's Creed for a long time, and I'm hoping that this final surprise will shed some light on the genetic memory mystery that has remained the talk of the town.

BlackSite online support limited on PS3

50°
353w ago - BlackSite: Area 51, Midway's upcoming Unreal Engine-powered shooter, is going to have a fairly robust online mode. According to IGN: "With the Xbox 360 version of the game, players will be able to play ranked and unranked matches, and voice support will have constant chatter for teammates while everyone will be able to hear each other if they're close enough, regardless of which team they're on."

Wait, but that's not the case for PS3! Most of these features are being cut for Sony's version. According to a Midway representative: "Basically, the PS3 supports the ability to host, search, and join - that's it. All of the other functionality did not make it to PS3: ranked / leader boards, match making, voice chat, private slots, etc." Essentially, expect a fairly bare-bones online mode for the PS3 version of BlackSite. This seems like a strange omission from Midway, especially considering the robust online features their upcoming Unreal Tournament will have

Turok Blowout

353w ago - New multiplayer tidbits, demo info, movies, screens and dinos.

Oh, do we have dinosaur news for you. The folks behind Turok -- a fresh start for the FPS franchise that's scheduled to ship in February -- stopped into the IGN offices the other day to show some new beasts and weapons, but that was just the beginning of their goody bag.

The biggest announcement for you, crazed-Turok fan: a demo is coming.

Yes, if you plunk down $5 at your local GameStop in the early part of November, you'll preorder the game, get a Turok T-shirt and walk away with a 30-minute Xbox 360 demo of the upcoming title. Have you already preordered it? Your store should be holding your demo and shirt. No GameStop around? You can grab the demo at Best Buy in December.

Although the final game will feature three difficulty levels, the demo will be locked on normal and take place during the first quarter of the game -- although it won't reveal the game's opening. If you can't wait to see what's on the disc, check out IGN's hands-on report Monday, October 29.

But don't think you have to wait a full week for big news; during our meeting, Josh Holmes, vice president and general manager of Propaganda Games, gave us the first solid details about the game's multiplayer mode during his visit. Sure, we've...
