Uncharted Developer talks Award System and SPU Usage

50°
357w ago - In an interview with PALGN, Naughty Dog game designer Evan Wells talked about the Upcoming PlayStation 3 exclusive, Uncharted. In the interview, Wells reveals much about the game including its length, quest, and why the game is perfect only for the PS3. Some of the key features revealed are as followed:

- First play-through should last 10-12 hours.
- There will be four levels of difficulty.
- There are 60 little treasures hidden throughout the game to keep the gamer immersed for hours on in, expanding the length of the game's experience.
- Rumble is built right into the game.

"We've also put into the game a medal system, so as you're playing the game if you perform special feats you'll get medals, such as getting a certain number of headshots, getting a certain number of headshots in a row, killing people, doing a special brawl combo, just lots of things along the way that will unlock the medals.

The medals then contribute to your overall medal score and your medal scores then feed into our bonus system which allows all of the unlockables to be unlocked." said Evan Wells.

Mark Rein praises PS3 version of UT3

50°
357w ago - In a recent forum post by Mark Rein, Vice President of Epic Games, he states that the PS3 version of Unreal Tournament 3 is running top notch and that PlayStation 3 owners will be in for a treat.

"I was playing the PS3 build for a few hours tonight and it is really, really fantastic. Amazingly smooth and solid. I think you PS3 users are in for a huge treat with UT3," said Mark Rein.

One of the best features about the PS3 version is the ability to download user maps created via the PlayStation Network. However without the PC version, players will not have access to a level editor, and must wait for PC users to upload their maps.

In addition, Epic Games has confirmed that the PS3 version will support both a keyboard and mouse and the SIXAXIS/DualShock 3 controller.

Midway Fights Next-Gen Snags

50°
357w ago - As Midway aims to return to profitability, snags with Unreal Engine 3, PlayStation 3 and stiff competition haven't been making things easy.
Midway hasn't made an annual profit since 1999, but analysts have noted that the Chicago-based game publisher does have potential to make money, with games like Stranglehold, Unreal Tournament 3 and Blacksite Area 51 (and of course, iterations of the undying Mortal Kombat franchise).

But there have been hurdles in front of that comeback, some of which are related to delays of PS3 versions of next-gen games and some that are related to Midway's company-wide adoption of a modified version of Epic's Unreal Engine 3, not to mention stiff competition in the action genre.

Most recently, there's the Blacksite: Area 51 delay. While the release date of the Xbox 360 and PC versions of the alien first person shooter have slipped by just a week to November 12, the PS3 version of the Unreal Engine 3 powered title has seemingly run into some more serious issues.

While not offering an explanation for the delay, a Midway spokesman confirmed to Next-Gen that the title would see a release after the other versions of the game, at some point "during the holiday season."

Whether the delay is specifically related to the UE3 engine or not is currently unclear,...
