Sony to put cheaper PS3 in play!

50°
341w ago - Sony Computer Entertainment America will unveil a $399 40GB PlayStation 3 on U.S. shores, sources said.

The release comes on the heels of an announcement by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe that a new lower-priced version of the PS3 will be launched on the continent thiscq, week of the 8th week.

"We're hearing Nov. 2 (for the U.S.)," said one industry source. A buyer for a major game retailer cited the same date, adding that SCEA has been dropping hints that stores should do all they can to clear out existing inventory in anticipation of the new model.

The new 40GB PS3 will have fewer features than the current 60GB ($499) and 80GB ($599) models, with two USB 2.0 ports instead of four, no backward compatibility for PS2 games and no multimemory card port.

But it will continue to play Blu-ray Disc movies as the PS3, despite its early struggles against Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360, remains a key part of Sony's battle with consumer electronics rivals over the future of high-definition movie playback.

SCEA did not return calls seeking comment, but in making the announcement in Europe, SCEE president David Reeves said: "The introduction of the new PS3 has been the result of extensive research into the entertainment needs and preferences of the next generation...

Visual Comparison: White Knight Story vs. The Last Remnant

50°
341w ago - With so many great role playing games coming out within the next year, we thought we might compare two of the most anticipated titles on PlayStation 3: White Knight Story and The Last Remnant (assuming Final Fantasy XIII isn't due out within the next year).

While details are still scarce, we can compare the visual styles and graphics of each title. The following images are not final product screenshots so keep in mind that things may change over the coming months.

Sony Making a Silver 40 GB PS3 ?

50°
341w ago - Sony today revealed their upcoming 40GB Sony Playstation 3. Unfortunately this new model will not be backward compatible, meaning it won't support any PlayStation 2 titles. It will feature 2 usb ports and no multimedia card reader. However it seems that Sony possibly forgot to mention one "new" feature ...

SCEE confirmed to PSNow! that the new 40GB model will have a matt finish instead of the regular glossy one we see on 60Gb and 80Gb units.

But the true surprise came when they told PS3Now! that the new 40GB will come in Satin Silver.

Yes, the finish on the 40GB model is a satin silver whereas the 60GB has a shiny finish."
Is Sony hiding a Satin Silver PS3 from us? Or is this a simple mistake from a SCEE PR rep...?

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Update

50°
341w ago - Though the holiday release season is nearly half over, Sony still has a handful of big titles up its sleeve slated to hit this year. Naughty Dog's first PlayStation 3 title, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, could turn out to not only be the best PS3 title of the season, but the best all year. Its mix of action and adventure looks like it was ripped straight out of an Indiana Jones film, and the game looks tighter and tighter every time we see it.

Yesterday we were able to check out a few snippets of some indoor-based locales from the game, the Customs House and Catacombs. The Customs House is where folks would check in and out anything going through the island, just like you'd do at an airport or whatnot these days. With the amount of gold, spices and such being ported around the seas in those days, it was a heavily-trafficked area.

These days the building is quite dilapidated, but that doesn't mean it isn't beautiful. Outside, vines creep in and out of a balcony that has fallen into ruin over time, which Nathan must carefully navigate by jumping from ledge to ledge. Inside, a series of outlaws blanket the floor where pillars lay broken and crumbled.

It's here that we saw some of the refined animation features in place in the current build. Thanks to the game's blending technology, different...

Go! Sports Ski Review for PS3

50°
341w ago - Created by Yuke's Media Creations, the development house behind the wildly popular and successful SmackDown vs. RAW franchise, Go! Sports Ski is an abomination of a game. Its controls are terrible, the feature set is extremely bare-bones (even for a downloadable title) and some of the options and perks are head-scratchingly stupid.

Let's begin with the control issues. Aside from menu navigation, the game uses the Sixaxis motion controls exclusively. Movement, jumping, tricks and everything else are performed by tilting the controller, and there's no way to change this. While turning works decently, to an extent at least (it can be hard to make extreme cuts in the snow), things like tricks and even just using your poles to push yourself can be frustrating, unresponsive and aggravating.

To push with your poles, you need to twist the controller left and right. This sounds simple enough, but the game will oftentimes think that you're trying to jump. And even when it does work, your dude will usually continue to push after you wish to stop, and you can't turn while pushing, so you're left out of control.

Speaking of control, there are issues with the gear that you're allowed to pick. You have three options for skis - one that turns well but is slow, one that's fast but turns like a boat, and one...
