The Week Ahead - 09/11/07 UK Releases

50°
352w ago - This could be considered a bit of a holding week as Assassins Creed (16/11/07) and Mass Effect (23/11/07) are just around the corner. However, as exciting as those two prospects are you'll surely be tempted to try out Infinity Ward's excellent Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which simply crackles with explosions and excitement.

Notably PS3 is beginning to see a fair few releases: Ratchet & Clank Future, Dynasty Warriors: Gundam and Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga are all decent but they're hardly the kind of games you'd play £299 for the privilege of playing. Meanwhile, the exclusive Lair is possibly the worst advertisement for Sony's console and controller to date.

The complete list of games released in the UK this week (09/11/07):

>Ben 10: Protector of Earth, PS2/DS, D3 Publisher
>Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, PC/PS3/360/DS, Activision
>Catz 2, DS, Ubisoft
>Deal or No Deal, PC/DS, Focus Multimedia
>Dynasty Warriors: Gundam, 360/PS3, Namco Bandai
>EA Playground, DS, Wii, EA
>Endless Ocean, Wii, Nintendo
>Fashion Designer Style Icon, DS, 505 Games
>Gears of War, PC, Microsoft
>Hamsterz 2, DS, Ubisoft
>High School Musical: Sing It!, PS2/DS, Disney
>Lair, PS3, Sony
>Lego Star Wars: The Compete Saga, DS/PS3/Wii/360, LucasArts

Call of Duty 4 Only Running at 720p?

50°
352w ago - Thanks to a tip from a fellow reader, it seems that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare may only run at 720p.

First off, the reader claims that the game looks absolutely breathtaking, but it only runs at 720p. The back of the box claims it supports 720p, 1080i, and 1080p, but his Samsung Full HD TV is only running it at 720p.

His TV has been checked, he is using an HDMI 1.3 cable and the PLAYSTATION resolution is set at 1080p, but the game still only runs at 720p.

To make sure it wasn't his TV, he tested other Full HD games, like NBA Street Homecourt, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, and LAIR. They all ran at 1080p like the box indicated.

Could Call of Duty 4 only run at 720p? We'll tell you as we find out more.

Devs Problems: Lack of memory on Sony PS3 and storage on Xbox 360

50°
352w ago - We have heard many gamers comparing the different games on the Sony PS3 and Xbox 360 but today we had a long comment from someone calling themselves "IsThis4Real" and they make an interesting case for both the PS3 and 360.

Also they outline some of the problems both games consoles face and explain a little about the CELL CPU. Have a read a let us know if you agree.

Here is IsThis4Real's comment: I honestly wish people would get over the whole "CELL" thing. Its totally, as it stands now, overated - and the concept is still in its infancy. Its not the be all end all of CPUs. Its simply a single IBM Power PC core with 7 SPEs. I think people still make the mistake in claiming and thinking that they are essentially seperate CPUs. They are not.

Its "simply" designed for very fast on the fly encoding/decoding (gross missunderstatement, I know - but I think for some it has to be put VERY simply if you know what I mean) - its specialty will lie in the integration of the home based setup.

This is something Sony mooted nearly 10 or more so years ago, the ability to have every single (Sony based) product in one house hold to be able to communicate with eachother. This is when they forst started announcing that they were working on a single SUPER cpu.Watch that space over the next...

PS3 Gets 'Largest Ever' Campaign; 80GB Sees 'Phenomenal' Sales

50°
352w ago - Sony Computer Entertainment America VP of Marketing Peter Dille has proudly unveiled two new TV spots for the PS3 and noted that the 80GB model has seen great sales growth at $499.

In conjunction with the launch of the new 40GB PS3 for $399 (which kicks off today), Dille said that the new campaign starts this weekend - hopefully spurring sales of the cheaper PS3. While the 'White Room' ads focused on the console's power, this campaign, which Dille says is "our largest ever behind a hardware platform," will focus on all the games coming out and the functionality of the machine.

"... we wanted to move beyond the 'power' message with a more high-energy, entertainment driven focus for the PS3. The games are here, the price point is now $399 and we wanted to make the news loud and clear. But we need to deliver that in a way that befits the PlayStation brand," Dille said. "And so, beyond the brilliant HD games that the PS3 delivers, you'll also see a big focus behind the PS3's Blu-ray movie capability and, for the first time, you'll see a major focus behind the PlayStation Network (did I mention online gaming is free on PS3??) and the exclusive gaming content available on the PlayStation Store, as well as breakthrough services like Home."

Dille also noted that the 80GB PS3, which is backwards compatible...

40GB PS3 Disassembled - Blu-Ray Drive Firmware Dumped!

50°
352w ago - Our very own Courier has taken the plunge and cracked open his new 40GB PS3. Most of the hardware seems the same, the Blu-Ray drive components are also the same. Some components such as RAM, has been made by different manufacturers, but for the most part, the drive is identical to any other model drive.

While he was there, he also pulled the BGA flash of the Blu-Ray drive, which is encrypted, at least for now! It also seems that the Blu-Ray drive EEPROM has a unique per drive ID. More to come!
