Japan PlayStation 3 sales beat Wii

50°
365w ago - Monthly sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) games console in Japan have overtaken those of rival Nintendo Wii for the first time.

Boosted by price cuts and the introduction of a cheaper version, PS3 sales totalled 183,217 in November, compared with 159,193 for the Wii.

The closely-watched figures from game magazine publisher Enterbrain will come as a welcome boost for Sony.

But analysts predict that the Wii will continue to dominate globally.

Sustainable trend?

"Overseas, I don't really see the PS3 doing that much at Christmas time primarily because it's still more expensive than the other machines and has less software," said KBC Securities analyst Hiroshi Kamide.

Both the PS3 and the Wii were launched towards the end of last year.

Since then there have been some months in which five or six times as many Wii consoles have been sold in Japan.

"It's nice to see the PS3 selling much better than six months ago," added Mr Kamide.

"But is it a sustainable trend? Is it going to really escalate from here? I'm not so sure."

The Wii has benefited from a much lower price compared with both the PS3 and Microsoft's XBox, but also from the novelty of its handset, which is fitted with a motion sensor.

Operation: (Warhawk) Omega Dawn

50°
365w ago - According to Dylan Jobe (Game Director, Warhawk): We've just finished development of our v1.2 patch and our first Booster Pack, Operation: Omega Dawn!... which is very different than "Red Dawn" or "Dawn of the Dead".

I'd like to give our blog readers a bit of info on our first downloadable content - and I'll try to keep in away from sounding to much like a sales-pitch filled with shallow marketing-speak. The team and I really wanted the Omega Dawn Booster pack to add a new gameplay experience and to enhance the replay value of the core Warhawk game. Not be some nickel-and-dime upgrade that takes advantage of our player community!!! (That's my own personal opinion on DLC so I'll get off my soapbox now)

So without further ado...

The Omega Dawn Booster pack adds 3 key things:

* A night-time battlefield with 6 layouts called the "Omega Factory". It's huge btw.
* New 7-player aircraft called the KT-424 Combat Dropship.
* And 5 updated bonus layouts for battlefields from the original game so that you can play using the new Dropship.

First let me ramble on about the new battlefield: Many of you all wanted a night time level so that's what we did. The battlefield takes place at night well... actually at early dawn. We wanted to...

Ratchet & Clank Future 2 will give more background on history

50°
365w ago - In the below video interview with two developers from Insomniac Games talk about creating Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. In the interview they are asked about things they had to cut from the game, which gives some interesting hints at Ratchet & Clank Future 2 about 2:30 minutes in.

To quote the answer: "There were certain things in the story, characters that I wanted to address more in this part of the story arch that we're not going to address until a later part of the story arch. So I can't go into too much of who they were. ... For instance the Max Apogee [the Lombax Anthropologist] story arch is something that we were not going into too deep, but we hint at it. And more of the background with the Lombaxes and what happened to them. It's things we hint at. The Zonie and the history of the Zonian and who they are. There's a lot of background to the world. If you interact with a lot of the NPC characters, you'll find out a lot of hints about it."

Watch what the Ratchet & Clank Future team have to say about their PS3-exclusive platformer game.

Nice to know they will continue the series.

PS3 Cracks Quicker Than the Rest, Passwords That Is

400°
365w ago - Want to get yourself some money in double quick time, or get hold of some top secret government documents? Then why not use your PS3 to crack some passwords faster than ever before!

Security researcher Nick Breese has harnessed the power of the PS3's cell processor to allow him to crack passwords with only a few hours work - despite formerly taking days to solve.

An Intel chip can go through 10-15 million cycles a second, whereas the PS3's chip can get through 1.4 billion.

"Brute force" password cracking is a simple method of simply trying every possible combination of characters until the correct combination is found. Having multiple cores in the PS3 chip allows it to try several passwords at once, speeding up the work greatly.

Don't panic though! You won't have a PS3 breaking into your bank account any time soon, though, as these eight-character passwords are rudimentary when compared to the sophisticated encryption used to protect online transactions and similar transfers of important information.
