Official: Sony sells PS3's Cell to Toshiba

339w ago - So much for their earlier denial, eh? It's now official. An anonymous Sony official has "confirmed" to Japan's Nikkei that they will sell their advanced computer chip operations to Toshiba in an effort to re-focus on core business. The official announcement is expected later today.

The sale gives Toshiba the manufacturing responsibility for the much hyped Cell processor used in Sony's PS3. Sony, of course, will continue to invest in the Cell chip. Nikkei says the deal is worth some ¥100 billion (about $858 million) and should be completed by March.

Sonic the Hedgehog is in a competitive mood of late. Taking a break from his normal evil-thwarting activities, he's penned in to showcase his company crossover dominance in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games next month and Super Smash Bros. Brawl in February, respectively.

Sonic's also going to take care of some business in his own backyard, as Sega today announced Sega Superstars Tennis, a mascot sports game from the latest Foundation 9 acquisition, Sumo Digital. The game is currently set for release on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, Wii, and Nintendo DS in Europe and North America in early 2008. The Xbox 360 and PS3 will feature online play.

Sonic may be the publisher's ace, but it will draw a pool of more than 15 playable characters from its lengthy history, including Super Monkeyball's AiAi, Space Channel 5's Ulala, and Samba De Amigo's Amigo. Each character will have their own abilities, as well as home courts, like Sonic's Green Hill Zone.

Sumo Digital is no stranger to the subject matter, having previously developed Virtua Tennis 3 for the Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation Portable and Virtua Tennis World Tour for the PSP. The studio has also worked with Sega before on recent...

Confirmed: Sony to launch cheaper PlayStation 3

339w ago - Although suspected, it's now confirmed: The 40GB PS3 model will launch November 2 in the US with a $399 price tag, along with a $100 price cut on the 80GB model, bringing the total cost down to $499. To quote:

The new version of the PS3 will come with a 40-gigabyte hard drive, cost $400, and go on sale on November 2, said Jack Tretton, president of Sony Computer Entertainment America. The price of the 80-gigabyte version will be cut to $500 from $600.

The 40-gigabyte model has already made its debut in Europe and Japan, and was widely expected to come to the United States ahead of the crucial year-end shopping season that accounts for the largest single chunk of annual video game software and hardware sales.

For the new 40-gigabyte PS3, Sony has removed its ability to play games for the predecessor PlayStation 2, which is still selling strong despite its aging technology.

"We're choosing to focus on the PlayStation 2 consumer with the PlayStation 2, which remains incredibly relevant, and focus on the PlayStation 3 consumer with the new 40-gigabyte model and the great software coming out," Tretton said.

Race for the Finish: Preorder ProStreet and receive unlock code

339w ago - It was recently announced that those who pre-order a copy of Need For Speed: ProStreet will receive an unlock code. This unlock code allows you to go to the Need For Speed website,, and customize your very own Subaru Impreza WRX STi with the Blueprint Demo. Once the game is released, gamers will be able to unlock their customized car straight into the game.

The unlock code is reportedly being handed out with pre-orders at "any major retailer"; However, there is no indication as to exactly which stores this includes. So race on over to your neighborhood video game retailer and race home with the unlock code to open up your own sweet new ride.

Possible Early Release of Ratchet & Clank PS3

339w ago - Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction was pushed back by Insomniac for 1 week to release on the 30th October in the US. This was so they could thoroughly check the game and make it as perfect as they could before it went to print. We know that the game has gone gold now, and there are now signs that it may be releasing on the 23rd October.

Insomniac let us know on their official podcast, The Full Moon Show, that their upcoming Playstation 3 exclusive Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction had gone gold. But, they also stated that they had pushed the release a week later since their production had stretched into a further week of testing.
