Mark Rein: PS3 UT3 graphics better than Gears of War

50°
351w ago - Epic head honcho says "something special" about playing PC shooter on PS3.

PS3 UT3 has better graphics than Gears of War according to Mark Rein, Epic's vice president.

Speaking in an interview with Pro-G at the launch of the PC version of the game, Rein said that he was "really proud" of the PS3 game, which he hoped would be out in the US this year. However, due to certification issues he remained sceptical about a similar release date for the European version, instead suggesting early 2008.

He said: "People are going to be pleasantly surprised. It's a really high end experience that pushes the graphics bar up even higher than Gears of War. There's more polygons, there's more stuff going on, there's more explosions and there's more things happening, so we're just really pleased with the way the game runs on the PS3."

Epic's blockbuster third-person shooter Gears of War has proved a massive hit since its release on the Xbox 360 last year. At the time it wowed audiences with its jaw-dropping graphics and gritty portrayal of war.

When asked about the difficulties some game developers have experienced with Sony's next-gen console, the typically enthusiastic Epic boss said: "Doesn't affect us baby!"

He added: "You know, bringing a game to any new piece of hardware...

Hacked2123_XMB (Not Custom Theme) preview for PS3!

100°
351w ago - To quote from hacked2123's post linked above:

CJPC is the only one to see any of this, and can vouch that this is not "Custom Theme" work. What I am working will not be disclosed fully until its complete though.

"With the recent release of the PS3 Firmware 2.0, I have found myself displeased for my own selfish reasons.

I have been working for more than a week on a project I intended to state about a month ago. Just to emphasizing my creditability as to beginning this project a week before this firmware I am releasing this screen capture of what I am working on. It shows little more than the fact that I am working on something, but when I release my completed work you will understand why this is such a big deal to me.

(This is by far a small reflection of the work, and to negatively judge this would be a poor decision)"

Compliments welcome

Blank Discs Inside Call Of Duty 4 At Best Buy? Better Open Them In The Store

50°
351w ago - Zak writes to tell us that his copy of Call of Duty 4 was blank. Thankfully, he opened it while he was still inside the Best Buy, so exchanging it wasn't a problem. (Though some random Geek Squad guy did accuse him of being a scammer.)
I generally read a few of the network sites, Giz, LH and of course for a chuckle I also read Consumerist. Now I lack photo proof of this as I immediately did an illegal u-turn and took my product back to the store, but I'll let you know anyways.

Yesterday I had exchanged an Xbox 360 game, 'Hour of Victory' as it was the wrong game, I wanted 'Call of Duty 4'. The girl at customer service was happy to oblige me and I was told to walk back and pick up whatever game I wanted to exchange. CoD4 wasn't on he shelf so I asked an associate walking around and she checked stock, where the title showed up in transit. She went into the back as they had just gotten a shipment earlier, and low and behold here she comes with my blessed CoD4!

I take it up front, finish my exchange and head home. Halfway there my buddy opens up this FACTORY SEALED copy and starts laughing followed by a couple choice four lettered words. I look and staring back at us out of the box is a completely virgin (even fingerprintless) disc. U-TURN! We get back to Best Buy and I walk up to the associate who had...

    PS3 Development Discoveries: Week 1

    100°
351w ago - Each week or so we will post a brief report from the resident PS3 Devs here, and below is one for this week:

    The PS3 Boot-up Procedure.

The SCC (Super Companion Chip), made by Toshiba gets the PS3 started up. It reads asecure_loader from flash, and loads it into SPE in isolation mode. The Flash reading is interesting, as the data on the flash chips are interleaved, so the SCC merges them, among other things.

asecure_loader is then decrypted and ran, and it brings up lv1ldr. The keys for self decryption (among other things) are most likely accessible at this time.

lv1ldr is then decrypted and ran, and verifies the integrity of lv1.self , decrypts and runs it.

lv1.self is most likely our base code, also known as the Hypervisor. The Hypervisor then calls lv2ldr.

lv2ldr is ran, and it runs lv2_kernel.self

LV2 kernel.self is essentially the PS3OS, it starts up, brings the XMB up, any game/movie in the drive.

This is a solid working theory. Without expensive hardware, we can not confirm this 100%, but it is the most logical approach!

A few select files from the flash:

    asecure_loader
    lv1ldr
    lv2ldr
    isoldr
    appldr
    default.spp
    lv0
    lv1.self
    lv2_kernel.self
