First Look: Tomb Raider: Underworld

50°
357w ago - For a series that was left practically dead after the horrifying Angel of Darkness, Tomb Raider has been revived so well by Crystal Dynamics that it's now got people who've never played the games hopelessly falling in love with it. Having first taken the spunky, extremely well-endowed Lara out for a spin in 1997, and having gone back to where it all began with Anniversary, this deranged, maniacal, slack-jawed Tomb Raider nutcase has seen it all. Having made Legend and Anniversary the best damned games in the series, Crystal Dynamics looks set to pull out all the stops in the upcoming Tomb Raider: Underworld, which already has a quite a bit of fans going "Drake who?"

We sat and dug through the first preview on the PLAY magazine, and we've got all the dirt on Lara's latest adventure. Directly continuing from her adventures in Legend, Tomb Raider: Underworld (as the name suggests) will see Lara explore vast labyrinthian areas around the world, in addition to doing all the monkey stuff that she does in one of the largest, lush areas seen this side of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. While it is not entirely sure how the story will tie in to Legend's and all that is hinted at in Anniversary, fans might want to look closer into Lord Richard Croft's words in Anniversary, and at the deeper connections between Jacqueline...

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue: Hands-On With the Japanese Version

50°
358w ago - Gran Turismo 5 is here. Well, okay, it's actually not the full version of Polyphony Digital's fifth iteration of the GT series; it's in fact Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, and no, it's not available in America yet. Instead, we downloaded the game onto the GameSpot office's Japanese PlayStation 3 to get a sneak peek at what to expect once it eventually does arrive here in the States. Nonetheless, the arrival of any GT game is a big event, and we've been happy to explore its various nooks and crannies since its release.

First things first: The Japanese version of Prologue is available both in disc format and as a downloadable game. We chose the latter and the download took a while to complete, probably close to 30 minutes over our office Internet connection. That's certainly a long time to wait, and it's reasonable to assume that downloading a game of this size on a home connection will take even longer.

With the game installed, we dove right in. The starting screen for the page is quite a departure from previous versions of the game and seems to be built around the online experience. The features available to you will change based on whether or not your PS3 is connected to the Internet. For example, when connected to the PlayStation Network, the main page of Prologue shows the various modes in the game, including...

Warhawk: The Skies are Alive on PS3

50°
358w ago - As part of GameSpy's Game of the Year Interview Series, we speak with Warhawk's Senior Producer, Harvard Bonin.

As the GameSpy editors gathered for our annual Game of the Year kick-off meeting, a furious argument broke out over the game Warhawk. "It's just a shame that the Warhawks were so underpowered," someone said. "Are you kidding me!?" someone else blurted: "A good player can dominate the map with one of those!" All of a sudden, everyone was chiming in: This weapon was unstoppable, that weapon was too weak, you're not using it right, etc. etc. It underscored the truth behind Warhawk's success as a multiplayer game: this game is so balanced that players continually walk a fine line between being a badass or a crater on the ground.

Aside from being a great game in its own right, Warhawk broke some new ground for the PlayStation 3. It was distributed both digitally and at retail. And as basically an online-only title, it really put the PlayStation Network to the test. There was no doubt in our minds that it should be a Game of the Year nominee.

On the eve of our annual Game of the Year awards, we took some time out to talk with Harvard Bonin, the Sr. Producer at Sony Computer Entertainment, America.

GameSpy: Thanks for taking the time to chat about Warhawk! Congratulations...

Confirmed: MGS4 and Metal Gear Online Join Together!

50°
358w ago - Since the announcement of Metal Gear Online, it's been left unclear whether or not it would be released as a standalone title or bundled together with Metal Gear Solid 4. It's only commonsense that the two should be paired together, but early talk didn't seem to suggest that they would be.

Well, the January '08 issue of the new PlayStation: The Official Magazine (formerly PSM) was just dropped off in my mailbox headlined on the cover with exclusive confirmation that MGS4 and MGO are in fact being integrated into one value-packed MGS experience for the PS3. Hurray!

The news comes as part of the magazine's "Top 10 Games of '08″ cover story, with MGS4 obviously sneaking away with the #1 spot. Beyond the exciting news of the MGS4/MGO merger, there are some other details revealed about MGO too, including word that it'll support up to 16 players in modes like Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill and Team Sneak on five "Starter Pack" maps.

Character customization sounds like a point of emphasis for the title too, with the article stating that players will be able to customize their characters with up to three special skills (they sound very similar to the perks in Call of Duty 4), and that skills and weapons will level up over the course of play.

There's...
