10 things the PS3 does right

100°
349w ago - Release those negative vibes; there is plenty for Sony to celebrate.

Do you remember when the PS3 was released? It's hard to believe that after all the pre-release hype, recheduled launch dates and unethical E3 blunders that this upcoming holiday season represents the PS3's first Australian Christmas. It is only eight months old... and even if you want to think globally the machine is only now sucking in the deep ones to blow out that big first birthday candle. We're not offering excuses for Sony's lacklustre media coverage, they dug their own hole, but we're not about to join the chorus of cries proclaiming that the PS3 is one big wrong.

In fact, we believe that there are plenty of things that the PS3 does right. Make no mistake; the top spot on the next-generation podium remains the company's goal and a realistic target. There is no doubting that it has been an arduous birth, but even beasts of great power take their first steps on shaky legs. We wonder what those who've been poking the beast with a stick and call it names are going to think when it grows it fangs and sharpens its claws? The only way now is up!

So what does the PS3 do right?

PS3 Systems Are In Abundance Post Black Friday

50°
349w ago - Well Black Friday is passed and if tradition serves correctly, it's the day that sets the trends for the holidays. How was the console war affected by Black Friday? Word on the streets is that Wii's are still hard to find, Xbox Premium and Elite systems are nowhere to be found and PS3 systems are everywhere, yet still selling.

If you want to get an 80gb or 40gb PS3, they are in plentiful piles. You can pretty much go to any store and buy one. Even thought the price drop has caused a sales surge, the stock from the past few months is in abundance. If you want a PS3 for Xmas, you should have no problems finding one.

Xbox 360's now come in 4 flavors: the Elite, the Premium, the Arcade and the Halo 3 box. Halo 3 boxes are easy to find. People just don't seem to like that color so they aren't jumping on it. Arcade systems are here and there. In my travels through many stores I was unable to find Premiums in abundance. Some stores had none at all while others had just a few. The Elite however, has disappeared off the planet. I did not see one Elite this weekend at all.

Wii stock is just like last year. It comes and it goes. It's just as popular as it was last Christmas if not more. I really thought they would be easier to find this year but Nintendo is doing it's best...

Midway and Epic Games Announce Unreal Tournament III Playstation 3

50°
349w ago - Good news for Playstation 3 gamers this holiday season. Unreal Tournament 3 has been confirmed for a December 10, 2007 release date by Midway Games and Epic Games today. Back in October, Midway Games wasn't anticipating the release would make it in time for a 2007 release, yet Epic Games did say they were aiming for December 2007. Midway does note that "limited quantities" will be available on December 11th.

From Midway: "Midway Games Inc. and Epic Games today announced that the PlayStation® 3 version of Unreal Tournament 3 is scheduled to ship to retail outlets in North America on December 10th. It is expected to begin arriving in stores in limited quantities the following day, with a U.S. suggested retail price of $59.95."

That's good news for the Playstation 3, especially since Ubisoft's Haze recently seems to have dropped off the 2007 PS3 release radar.

UPDATE: Midway responded that the limited quantities on December 11th are "due to shipping, some stores receive product earlier than others." Unreal Tournament III doesn't have a strict street date, so like some of the other recently released PS3 games, it will be sold by retailers as it is received. Midway also confirmed that there won't be a Playstation 3 collector's edition.

Worldwide PS3 releases for the week of November 25th

50°
349w ago - After the crazy spend-a-thon that was last week's release list, we can all finally give our wallets a little rest.

Though those of us in Europe may need to keep it on standby for the near future as both Uncharted and Singstar will be released in just under two weeks. Here's the full release for this week:

US Games:
No new releases

EU Games:
Blazing Angels 2
Stranglehold
The Golden Compass
Cars: Mater-National

Asian Games:
Tony Hawk's Project 8

Slim pickings indeed! There's no reason to moan, however, as we've just had a couple weeks worth of top-notch games hitting our shelves. There's little more to come this year, with the exception of Unreal Tournament 3 which should be available in the US in mid-December.

Don't forget your PS3 is region free for all games listed above, so feel free to import to your heart's content. Release dates are subject to constant change so be sure to check your local store before leaving the house. Disclaimer over.
