PS3 Firmware Tool 1.00 Sneak Peek

400°
357w ago - Over the past few weeks, mainman has been working on a tool, with the assistance of our other PS3 Devs. This tool creates user-readable files from the PS3 flash dumps.

PS3's have two flashes, the firmware is spanned across both ot them. On boot they are interleaved and byte swapped. This tool recreates the process which interleaves and byte swaps the flashes.

This tool then creates a folder named PS3Nand-XXX.XXXX, where XXX.XXXX is the contents of "sdk_version", which is a file that stores the firmware revision of the PS3.

Upon completing that, the tool extracts every file from the flash, into said folder. Alas, all of the files (list below) are encrypted, but they are interesting nevertheless.

However if a PS3 was upgraded, it keeps a copy of the older flash as well. Say you are on 1.50, and upgrade to 1.60, it keeps 1.50 on there, and adds 1.60. The second firmware in this case, is not dumped (yet).

There are still a few bugs, it does not extract both firmware versions on a PS3, like the previous mentioned case. It also searches as a start for a fixed position, so it may not work with all dumps. We have had the most success with Infectus dumps, which you can get at Hardstore.

UT3 on PS3 gets first user-created mod!

50°
357w ago - As Epic explained on its forums delays dotting the i's and crossing the t's held up the tools needed for modders to make their content PS3 compatible. While it usually takes a little while for the mod scene to really cranking anyway, that sparked some disappointment that PS3 gamers wouldn't be able to start adding user-created mods to their game right out of the box.

We've got it hosted for you right now on our FileFront site: Download DM-Shrine for PS3 here.

The public release of those tools remains in limbo (don't worry; it shouldn't be too long our sources say). In the meantime, Epic themselves have stepped in and using their developer version of the tool have packaged up a surprise Holiday treat for PS3 UT3 gamers. The first ever user-created, not to mention FREE, map for Unreal Tournament 3 on PS3 is DM-Shrine by Thomas Browett, who goes by the name Setheran on the official UT3 forums.

And here's Epic's Mark Rein with all the details from his forum post on their official site:

Epic Games is proud to take the first bold step in a new era! Today we're releasing the very first user-created content for...

Porn Industry Warms Up to Blu-ray

50°
357w ago - A while ago, Digital Playground and others in the porn industry have strongly avoided Blu-ray as it is more costly to produce for and because the Blu-ray association themselves have expressed reservations on publishing such content.

However, in realizing how much money and power is involved and the fact that the format war is far from over, the porn industry has decided to put its stuff on both formats. A spokesperson for Digital Playground also revealed that a lot of Playstation owners were asking when their content would hit Blu-ray too as a reason for making the Blu-ray move.

To quote: So why go with Blu-ray? Joone explains, "A lot of people were emailing that bought a PlayStation and they were basically saying, 'When are you guys going to release Blu-ray?' They really have no preference in format yet because it's so now. When it comes down to image quality, there is no difference between the two."

The first Blu-ray title from Digital Playground is Pirates, which has garnered awards from all of the major industry outlets. Adult Video News says that Pirates, in its standard and HD DVD formats, holds the record for highest sales and rentals of XXX video.

So splendid is "the most expensive adult effort yet produced," according to Digital Playground, that the Motion...

Gran Turismo 5: Prologue previews!

50°
357w ago - It's like GT5 Lite, but still kind of expensive. The real, full Gran Turismo 5 is due out Holiday 2008, at best, so to please the legion of GT fans (or cash in shamelessly, depending on your point of view), Sony CEJ just released Gran Turismo 5: Prologue in Japan. Obligatory stats: 37 cars, 5 tracks, $40 via Japanese PSN or about $50 if you import a disk (PS3 is region-free, so guess your way through the menus and you can play with little difficulty).

That's a lot of cash for something that makes no claim of being a full game. Prologue offers a series of tiered events, time trials, an arcade mode, and a taste of GT5-features-to-come, such as an RSS-like automotive news feed (in Japanese, but interesting nonetheless) and GT TV, a video content hub that could grow into something really cool. And on December 25th, the online multiplayer goes live. We're expecting support for 16 players, with the usual leaderboards and hopefully some other trimmings, but we won't really know until next week.

Unsurprisingly, Prologue looks and feels pretty great (look under the video tab above to see it in action), but at this point improvements to the series are limited, though a 'professional' setting option aimed at the hardcore increases the game's realism and rewards deft throttle control. Prologue currently has no US...
