Satin Silver PS3 Hits Japan on March 6

365w ago - Today, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan (SCEJ) has announced yet another color variation, with the same 40GB configuration as before, for the Playstation 3. You may have seen this color in an early prototype PlayStation 3 console (or the early "banana" concept Playstation 3 controller).

The Satin Silver PlayStation 3 will be available in Japan on March 6, 2008, for 39,800 JP Yen (Including tax), with a packed in Satin Silver Dualshock 3 controller. The Satin Silver Dualshock 3 controller will also be available separately for 5,500 JP Yen (Including tax).

From SCEJ: "A new fine metallic "Satin Silver" is offered as an additional color to the existing PS3® (CECHH00 Series) line-up of "Clear Black" and "Ceramic White".

Choosing from a broader selection of colors to match their lifestyle and preferences, users will be able to enjoy next generation interactive entertainment contents on Blu-ray Disc as well as via the broadband network at home."

DMC4 is 720p on PS3 & 360 Desipte Blog’s Press Release

365w ago - A Gaming Blog got a tad worked up over a supposed Capcom Press Release, which states that the console versions of Devil May Cry 4 run at a sub-HD resolution. This press release was fake.

The press release reads thus:

PC version will supports DX9 and DX10 versions. The PC version support higher resolution (In order to maintain stability in the game at 60 FPS, XBOX360, PS3 supports only 1024 * 640 resolution).

Apart form the questionable English, which could be explained by being a poor translation, the "press release" is wrong. Both console demos of DMC4 have been confirmed by Beyond3d's pixel counters to run natively at 720p. That is, 1280 by 720 pixels.

Although the blogger asks for confirmation from the retail game and not the demo, his fears should be put to rest. In my experience there has yet to be a game that has reduced its resolution from the demo to the full retail release release.

Furthermore, games are designed with a particular resolution in mind and a decision to lower the resolution would not be made at the last minute.

Need more evidence? Each console demo runs at a very strong 60 frames per second at 720p. There is no need for the resolution of the game to be lowered. Moreover, the development of both the demo and the full retail game...

PS3 Devil will make you CRY with 20 min install time

365w ago - Devil May Cry 4 is coming to 360 and PS3 this Friday. That's good news mainly for the reason that it's an awesome game. You can look forward to the review later this week, or read this if you can't wait any longer. But there's a little issue of a MASSIVE installation process that forces all PS3 gamers to wait just under 22 mins before they can tuck in to Dante's finest.

You'd think there'd be a benefit after being forced to install nearly 5GB of game data, like shorter or even no loading times during the entire game. Funny thing is though, it doesn't make much difference to load times compared to the 360 version, that you can play straight away.

We clocked the entire install process at 21 minutes, 41 seconds.

Following that the opening load time on PS3 was five seconds against eight on 360. And then three seconds versus four, and four versus five seconds in following load screens, PS3 - 360. As you can see there's not much in it.

So over the course of an eight-to-ten hour game you might get your 21 minutes back over 360 players with ever-so-slightly shorter loading times. But really?

Time to put the stopwatch away and get back to playing the game. Check out in-game footage here.

While we're 'on topic', it's also being reported that (in Japan) the PS3...

PS3 Eboot.bin FULLY decrypted via Memory Dump!

365w ago - We hinted on this in previous PS3 Dev postings, but now it deserves a post of its own. We have successfully obtained the decrypted ELF file from an encrypted SELF that we ran, then dumped using the PlayStation 3.

As you can see in the image below, there is an ELF file, totally decrypted from the retail game disc! This removes BOTH the disc layer of encryption on the EBOOT.BIN, as well as the file layer of encryption.

In other recent PS3 Dev news, we have managed to successfully downgrade a PlayStation 3 without utilizing a previous flash dump backup of the console. Normally to downgrade your PS3 you first need a copy of the original firmware (made with Infectus). However our method does not need any flash backup, as it uses the PS3's updates to downgrade for us.

Keep in mind it's still a work in progress, but expect additional details on this project as they become available. Look for more information coming this week!

American McGee Confirms Unreal Engine 3 'Twisted Tale' Project

365w ago - Spicy Horse co-founder American McGee has confirmed that his Chinese-based studio has a second game in development in addition to the (pictured) episodic American McGee's Grimm.

Though relatively low-profile thus far, the designer has only revealed that the early in production game is a "[Unreal Engine 3] based, big publisher, multi-platform, twisted tale project".

As part of a post on his official weblog, McGee reveals that the Grimm project, being produced for online game subscription service GameTap, is at "the half-way point", commenting: "we're 12 episodes in, with another 12 to go."

He then goes on to reveal basic details on the next project, which is Unreal Engine 3-based and therefore presumably destined for next-gen consoles including Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 - though platforms are unconfirmed at this time.

McGee, who created American McGee's Alice while at Electronic Arts and whom Gamasutra recently talked to about his plans for Grimm ends the call for developers to work on this new franchise by noting that "...an official announcement will come when the time is right".
