Report: PS3 comback, shallow Wii, tepid portables in '08

50°
349w ago - According to IGN GamerMetrics, which monitors the traffic patterns of some 15 million hardcore gamers, the PlayStation 3 is "poised to make a run" in 2008 thanks to strong interest in Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Devil May Cry 4, and LittleBigPlanet, three of which are exclusive.

"The combined interest in upcoming PlayStation 3 software pulled the PS3 even with the Xbox 360," reads the report, "which suggests that Sony could be on the verge of its long awaited comeback."

With regards to Nintendo, the stat-tracking ninjas at GamerMetrics predict another banner year for company thanks to Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, and Wii Fit, but that the "Wii software lineup still lacks depth."

And gamers hoping for fewer sequels and more fun on the go may be sad to learn that established franchises will continue to dominate and there will be a "relative lull for DS and PSP" games in 2008, says the report.

There's always next year...

Turok Demo Impressions

50°
349w ago - If you've just been aching to get your hands on Propaganda Game's upcoming Turok title, the wait is finally over. Even though the game doesn't ship until February 5th, a demo of the game is available in the latest issue of the Official Xbox Magazine.

This game is not necessarily a sequel but rather a reboot of a franchise that was desperately in need of some fresh innovation, and hopefully Propaganda games will end up delivering.

In the game you play as Joseph Turok, a member of the FNG military unit that has been sent to another planet in search of a war criminal. As luck would have it, the planet happens to be infested with dinosaurs.

The demo begins with you and your fellow squad mate Slade as you traverse your way through a dark system of caves, and it doesn't take very long for a multitude of beautifully animated Raptors hurl themselves upon you. One of the things that the game's developer Propaganda, has stressed is their focus on the more primal side of Turok.

This involves taking down dinosaurs with your bare hands, and it actually proves to be more effective than using weapons. You equip the knife by pressing down on the directional pad, and pulling the right trigger will allow Turok to wrestle and stab the beasts into submission. If things go awry and you...

Sony Responds To December NPD Sales, Seems Pleased

50°
349w ago - Sony isn't going to let a sales drubbing from the Wii and Xbox 360 this past December get it down. The company did quite alright, by its own accord and thinks the best is yet to come, so says its NPD Group sales response.

Sony points out PlayStation total hardware revenue was $714 million for the month, which is not pocket change, by any means and a figure that surpasses both Nintendo and Microsoft's hardware revenue.

Guitar Hero games are still selling better on the PlayStation 2, it says, as is Madden. We even get software info for the PlayStation 3 version of Call of Duty 4, which sold 522,000 copies to the Xbox 360's 1.47 million. Hang in there guys! Full statement after this.

PlayStation by the Numbers - December 2007

PlayStation® platforms had a great holiday season, based on NPD December 2007 sales data:

Hardware Momentum (PS3, PS2 and PSP)

* December 2007 was the biggest month for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3â„¢) since launch, with 798K hardware units sold in December; this represents an increase of 60% over December of last year. With upcoming titles like Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Devil May Cry 4, Burnout Paradise, and HAZE as well as current momentum for Blu-ray, there is a great deal of enthusiasm for the PS3 as we enter the new year.

Crysis possibly heading to PS3!

400°
349w ago - Even before the PC version released, rumors of a PS3 conversion of the stunning Crysis (developed by Far Cry creators Crytek) were rife, and not far off the mark if insiders at the studio are to be believed. The game looks to be a port of the PC original plus some extra modes and features, a kind of Crysis 1.5.

Like the PC game you can expect a visual powerhouse; an open-world shooter that begins on a beautiful tropical island before things take a turn for the worse and aliens from a parallel world stake a claim on Earth.

Only the mighty Killzone 2 could possibly hold a candle to this shooter. For technical reasons we hear an Xbox 360 version of Crysis isn't in development.

Bet you're glad you bought a PS3 now, eh?

Rumor: PS4 to be backwardly compatible?

50°
349w ago - And could PS3 backward compatability make a return, too?

Sony isn't ready to turn its back on backward compatability just yet, according to a job ad put out by the company.

So Gamefront.de is reporting, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan is currently advertising for a software engineer to deal with backward compatability for both the PS3 and an unspecified next-gen console - which sounds an awful lot like the PlayStation 4 to us.

Specifically, the engineer will be required to implement and optimise emulation software for PS1, PS2, PSP and PS3 games on both formats.

Not only would it suggest that PS4 development is now at the point where Sony can start thinking about specific software such as emulators, the fact the PS3 is mentioned as part of the job brief is also of note.

Although Sony has enjoyed considerably more PS3 success since it introduced the 40GB model last year (going so far as to drop all other versions of the PS3 in Europe and Japan), the fact it's not backwardly compatible with the PS2 hasn't gone down well with some gamers.

With many gamers still owning large numbers of PS2 games, reintroducing PS2 compatability would only help strengthen the PS3's improving image.

Or on the other hand, it could all just be wishful...
