PS3 GPU Use in Linux Video available!

50°
333w ago - CNLohr shared this video of the recent PS3 Linux 3D Graphics access progress. This is an example of code running on Linux, under the hypervisor talking to the Nvidia RSX (video card) on the PlayStation 3. This is done entirely without proprietary drivers.

Shown is 3 animated quads, drawn in immediate mode as well as a series of triangles in the background drawn using an index buffer. This demo is a modified version of IronPeter's libps3rsx running via patched 2.6.24 experimental, unofficial kernel on Gentoo Linux.

Until recently, not enough was known about how to use the RSX to make any headway to usable, free access to the 3D contexts on the GPU on the PS3. With some work, homebrew developers may soon be able to write their own 3D applications.

Sony caught violating GPL

50°
333w ago - Maker of exploding batteries, Sony has been illegally dipping its toe into Open Sauce code libraries to build a PS2 game.

Open sourcer, Alexander Strange was snuffling around the European release of the game ICO when he noticed new files SRCFILE.TXT and TRFILE.TXT and had a look at them.

In amongst the tangled code were bits of the GPL library libarc for compressed data handling.

Sony, which is a big champion of protecting creative rights, has failed to credit the code's author or mention libarc or the GPL.

Strange said that there was not a lot of code there, just two files from libarc and they add up to about 1500 lines put together. But a GPL violation is still a GPL violation and Sony is pretty nasty when someone violates its copyrights.

He said that Shadow of the Colossus, the sequel to ICO, doesn't seem to use any other code.

Strange has tried to get hold of libarc's creator Masanao Izumo but he has not been able to contact him.

On some of the boards there is talk that if Sony are caught breaking the GLP it might have to open sauce the whole game.

Holiday Presence: Sony – The Peter Dille Interview

333w ago - PS3 to live 10 years: Sony's Dille on firmware updates, Competition & More

With the holiday shopping season about to be in full swing, we sit down with the big three console makers, get their thoughts on their 2007 year, why consumers should want their respective console this year, plans for after the new year and much more.

We wrap up our series with an interview with Sony's senior vice president of marketing, Peter Dille. While Sony may be in third place in the console horse race, behind Nintendo and Microsoft, don't count it out yet. As Dille is quick to point out, the PlayStation
3 is holding its own when it comes to core features and exclusive titles. While Microsoft grabbed headlines after grabbing previously exclusive PS3 titles like Assassin's Creed and Virtua Fighter 5, you're still only going to be playing games like Heavenly Sword, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Ratchet & Clank Future on Sony's machine. We talked with Dille about exclusivity, the embattled Blu-ray format and the company's plans for 2008.

Note: We originally intended this story to run Nov. 21, and after several delays and false starts, we finally got our questions answered. We apologize for the tardiness, Sony fans.

Game Informer: You face some serious competition this holiday season...

Assassin's Creed PS3 issues still exist, despite patch

50°
333w ago - Ubisoft may have released a patch for the PS3 version of Assassin's Creed, but unfortunately a number of gamers are reporting that the patch did nothing for them and the game is still freezing in various places.

To quote from the link above:

LOL - dont expect too much guys.

I was skeptic - and rightfully so. I downloaded the 25 MB update. Game launched and I tried to continue my game.

Altair froze on the blue loading screen - AS USUAL.

THIS UPDATE DID NOTHING FOR ME....
