Rumor: Orange Box patch might be on the horizon

50°
340w ago - It's no secret the PS3 version of Orange Box is inferior to the PC and 360 version due to the unforgivable amounts of bugs and bad coding. Many gamers have voiced their displeasure about the game, and one upset gamer, who purchased the game despite the highly publicized problems, posted a thread on Valve's forums. Soon after, a Valve employee responded to address his complaints.

"I hope that we will be able to correct any major issues in the future," wrote Burton before wishing him a "Happy New Years." Now, this can be interpreted numerous ways, however, the most likely scenario is Valve issuing a patch to address these problems.

One thing to keep in mind is that this mess isn't entirely Valve's fault since it handed over reigns to EA London for the PS3 port. However, it's still Valve's baby, and it's most certainly in the developer's best interests to keep the quality of its most-popular franchise as high as possible.

PS3 NAND Dump Extractor released!

750°
341w ago - Tonight mainman has released the PS3 NAND Dump Extractor/Unpacker that has been in the works for awhile!

Download: PS3 NAND Dump Extractor

It comes with a Windows and Linux binary as well as source code, and those without an Infectus Mod can still experiment with it using the following 'dumpable dumps' files (via PS3 Infectus) available in iRC EFnet #PS3News when merged:

samsungk9f1g08uoa_a-_www.PS3News.com_.rar [54.2 MB (56,925,643 bytes)]

samsungk9f1g08uoa_b_usb-_www.PS3News.com_.rar [54.4 MB (57,066,577 bytes)]

From the ReadMe file: This tool is used to interleave, then byteswaps both dumps of the PS3 NAND. Upon completion, it creates a 'user readable' file.

This file is then scanned by the tool, and the flash files are extracted to a folder. This folder is named PS3Nand-XXX.XXXX, where XXX.XXXX is the SDK Version magic in the flash (usually the version number of the firmware)

.B .A usually works, however in some cases .A .B order is required.

Turning Point: Fall of Liberty Preview

50°
341w ago - Craig Allen is passionate about history. So much so that the CEO of Spark Unlimited arranged to present his latest project at the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms in Westminster. Not only that, but Allen was also encouraging the press to check out the Churchill Timeline - it's actually worth a read as well. I'm glad I took his advice.

Being behind Call of Duty: Finest Hour and leading a team that has been involved with the Medal of Honour franchise, I asked Allen what it was about historical events that excite him so much. "All good things come from life experiences, I believe. And I think it's important to keep learning and teaching about the life experiences of others who have made a difference, it's incredible to see what people have gone through in their lifetimes." In developing Turning Point, he reveals in his presentation that games based on history have the power to teach gamers about important events. "Once you've explored history however, you start to take that further and begin to ask 'What if?'"

It's this 'What if' concept that Turning Point adopts to give it a unique angle on the now familiar World War II FPS. The game is set in an alternate reality to our own, based on one pivotal moment in history - Winston Churchill, having been involved in a traffic accident...

Eight Things Sony Needs To Do For The PS3 In 2008 To Catch Up

50°
341w ago - Now that the year 2007 is nearly over and with 2008 just around the corner we really need to think about something. If you are interested in the console war at all you may know the Sony PlayStation 3 is the most expensive console out there (yes the X360 Elite is $50 more than the 40GB PS3, but the 80GB PS3 is also $50 more than the elite) and because of this the PS3 is in last place in overall sales (there are also more reasons why, but this is one of the main reasons why).

Now this does not mean that the PS3 is not selling anything at all, this only means that all of the PS3's that have been sold from around the world have not been matched with the Nintendo Wii's and the Microsoft Xbox 360's. Right now the PS3 has sold 7.77M, the Wii has sold 17.07M, and the Xbox 360 has sold 14.07M (according to VGChartz). Now, if things keep going this way, they might lose this war.

Another thing that is the cause of being last is that the PS3 has had many exclusives, but they lost most of them. For some of them Microsoft has paid the companies to go multi-platform, like Rockstar's GTA4, but some had gone multi-platform because of development costs. Now, Sony may not have been able to secure those that went multi because of development costs, but they could have secured the exclusives that Microsoft had paid...
