Sony PlayStation 3 Europe Sales Climb on Price Cut

50°
347w ago - Sony Corp., the world's largest video-game console maker, sold a record number of PlayStation 3 machines in Europe during the holiday shopping season after lowering prices to compete against Nintendo Co.'s Wii.

Sony, which began selling PlayStation 3s in Europe in March, shipped about 1.2 million consoles in the region during the five- week period ended Dec. 31, Kazuo Hirai, president of Sony's game division, said in a Bloomberg Television interview aired today. That's in line with U.S. shipments during the period, he said.

Price cuts and the introduction of a cheaper model helped Sony approach its goal of selling 11 million PlayStation 3s in the year ending March. Still, analysts at Nikko Citigroup Ltd. and Daiwa Institute of Research Ltd. predict the Tokyo-based company will miss the target after being outsold by the Wii and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360.

``It's an industry consensus that PS3 sales will fall short of the target,'' said Mitsuhiro Osawa, a Tokyo-based analyst at Mizuho Investors Securities Co., who rates Sony shares ``outperform.'' ``Sony must think it's okay as long as the game business doesn't drag much on its overall earnings.''

Sony, which generated 12 percent of revenue from the game unit during the three months ended Sept. 30, has posted seven straight quarters...

Developers losing faith in Unreal Engine 3, what’s next?

347w ago - This in-depth Gameplayer article tackles the issues currently facing Unreal Engine 3 (law suits, PS3 compatibility) and then examines the other engines that are powering the next-generation of gaming to look for viable alternatives for developers looking to license middleware.

"Perhaps Unreal Engine 3 isn't the middleware to power the next-generation after all?

With so much new IP on the roster, much of which requires new engines to be built from scratch, there is suddenly a lot more choice out there for developers seeking alternative middleware solutions."

First Look at 2 Days 2 Vegas!

50°
347w ago - Looking for something that might provide a more emotional and story driven experience than Grand Theft Auto? Perhaps a game that makes you feel like the choices you make effect the outcome of the storyline? Then 2 Days 2 Vegas should be at the top spot on your list.

If you are looking for a general synopsis on the game then check out our preview here. However for further details we contacted the developers at Steel Monkey, and got an inside scoop on what gamers can expect from the title now and when it releases later this year.

First off, let us just get this out of the way. 2 Days 2 Vegas will appear on the PC and Xbox 360 this Christmas, and then be followed by the PlayStation 3 release soon after in 2009. The reason for moving the PS3 development back is simple.

"Resources," said Tim Dvoskin, managing director at SteelMonkey. "We are too small to tackle everything at once."

However our thoughts are perhaps with more time, the developers will use the PS3 to their advantage, utilizing the Blu-ray format to include more content in the game. It seemed to us that when we spoke with Edwin Loo, the games producer, at GDC 2007, Steel Monkey was excited about the extra storage Blu-ray provided and that they would actually use it.

Now let's talk about the new screenshots....

Rumor: PS3 set to receive yet another price drop - $299

350°
347w ago - According to a few posters at SlickDeals, a Web site which specializes in reporting the latest prices of various electronics products, the PS3 is set to receive yet another price cut and will go down to as low as $299 on January 28th.

To quote: Several posters at SlickDeals.net are reporting that the PS3 may have yet another price drop towards the end of the month. Many are rumoring that a $299 PS3 will be announced on January 28.

SlickDeals.net is a website dedicated to providing consumers with the latest prices in electronics, breaking the news of both of the previous PS3 price drops and the 360 price drop a few weeks early, along with the CheapAssGamer forums.

Though it does seem early for this to occur, Sony did recently announce that the price of manufacturing of the PS3 did drop from $800 per unit at the launch to $400 currently. This is mainly due to the success of Blu Ray, especially with Warner Bros. going Blu Ray exclusive earlier this month.

Now there are also rumors that Paramount found a loophole in their HD DVD exclusivity contract and will be going Blu Ray as well - leaving Universal and Dreamworks as the only remaining HD DVD studios.
