DMCA Leagalizes Video Game and Phone Jailbreaking as Fair Use

550°
213w ago - The Electronic Frontier Foundation recently won a DMCA ruling that, under most 'fair use' circumstances, no longer makes it illegal to hack and jailbreak devices including video games and portable phones including Apple's iPhone.

Essentially consumers shouldn't need Apple's approval for everything you put in your device just because the device itself was made by Apple, much like you don't need HP's approval for the paper you put in their printer or Serta's approval for who can sleep on your mattress.

"In addition to jailbreaking, other exemptions announced Monday would:

• allow owners of used cell phones to break access controls on their phones in order to switch wireless carriers.
• allow people to break technical protections on video games to investigate or correct security flaws.
• allow college professors, film students and documentary filmmakers to break copy-protection measures on DVDs so they can embed clips for educational purposes, criticism, commentary...

Guerrilla Games Director Details Killzone 3 PS3 Controls

215w ago - Guerrilla Games Director Victor Zuylen has detailed a comparison of the controls between Killzone 2 and the upcoming PS3 video game Killzone 3.

To quote from the official site, linked above: "For Killzone 3, Guerrilla's developers are aiming to keep the unique sense of weight in the game while ramping up the accuracy and responsiveness of the controls. We talked to Game Director Mathijs de Jonge to get a better idea of the considerations involved with the redesign.

"Our first priority when we started working on the controls for Killzone 3 was to listen closely to Killzone 2's players - what they liked, what they disliked, and how they felt things could be improved," Mathijs says.

"Accuracy and responsiveness consistently came up as the top issues. At the same time, a lot of players were saying they loved the weighty feel."

That might sound contradictory, but one doesn't have to preclude the other. "For the most part, the unique sense of weight in Killzone 2 comes directly from the first-person animations, not from the control scheme," Mathijs explains.

"The speed of movement and the way the camera bobs up and down are consistent with the view of a person carrying around heavy equipment."

When the team went back to the drawing board, they...

Activision Boss Wants Video Game Consoles Replaced by PCs

500°
216w ago - Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has spoken out against dedicated videogame consoles, claiming that his company could be making significantly more money on open platforms like the PC.

To quote: Speaking to the [Register or Login to view links], Kotick claims that 60 percent of Xbox Live users are there "principally because of Call of Duty," and that Activision doesn't see a fair share of the money from it.

Kotick described closed console networks as "walled gardens," and said that his company would "very aggressively" support PC manufacturers such as Dell and HP in any efforts to produce gamer-friendly PCs that plug directly into televisions, creating the opportunity for Activision to open an online network of its own.

Kotick made similar statements to The Wall Street Journal last month, claiming at the time that only 30 percent of the company's profits come from console games.
