Petitboot Bootloader (OS Selector) Updated for PS3 Linux

550°
283w ago - Petitboot is a graphical bootloader for the PlayStation 3. In 2007 the initial Petitboot Bootloader for PS3 was released.

In 2008 the [Register or Login to view links] Benjamin Herrenschmidt and Jeremy Kerr updated it to v0.2 (rename to otheros.bld to install) which is available here:

Recently Sony's own PS3 Dev Geoffrey Levand has been updating it (linked above) further, with today's build available below:

Installing Petitboot
1. Put your otheros.bld file on to a USB disk, in a file called /PS3/otheros/otheros.bld. Assuming your USB disk is mounted at /media/usbdisk:

[jk@pokey ~]$ mkdir -p /media/usbdisk/PS3/otheros
[jk@pokey ~]$ cp otheros.bld /media/usbdisk/PS3/otheros/

If you don't have a USB disk,...

Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 Builds Now Available for PS3 Linux

650°
285w ago - Recently some new Ubuntu builds have been made available for PS3 Linux. Although Ubuntu does not officially support it, the PS3 versions are maintained through community support.

PlayStation 3 Desktop CD: For Sony PlayStation 3 systems. (This defaults to installing Ubuntu permanently, since there is usually not enough memory to try out the full desktop system and run the installer at the same time. An alternative boot option to try Ubuntu without changing your computer is available.)

Those interested in keeping up on the daily builds can check the link above or [Register or Login to view links], and props to both xmen3 and mihaiolimpiu for the news.

PS3 Linux SDL Video Support Patch Now Available!

500°
290w ago - Just before the weekend, slouken posted (linked above) the following PS3 Linux SDL video support patch news:

Hello. This patch provides basic support for video on the Sony PS3 Linux framebuffer.

Scaling, format-conversion, and drawing is done from the SPEs, so there is little performance impact to PPE applications.

This is by no means production quality code, but it is a very good start and a good example of how to use the PS3's hardware capabilities to accelerate video playback on the box.

The driver has been verified to work with ffplay, mplayer and xine. This piece of software has been developed at the IBM R&D Lab in Boeblingen, Germany and is now returned to the community. Enjoy !

OtherOS OpenSUSE 11.1 Bootloader for PS3 Linux Available

200°
290w ago - I came across this site looking for Linux, but this looked like it would be better perhaps.

Hardware Requirements
• A computer to download and copy files on to media.
• Playstation3 with: USB Keyboard and Mouse (A Wireless USB Keyboard & Mouse is even better)
• Any of the following recording media: USB Flash or HD drive, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, BD-R, or BD-RE disc. If the PS3 has memory card slots: Memory Stick, SD memory card, or CompactFlash.

Download: [Register or Login to view links] / [Register or Login to view links]

Note: Just as with any system, having both a keyboard and mouse simplifies things a lot. But it is possible to install with only a mouse, and possibly even simpler with only a keyboard!

Tip: With only a mouse it is possible to copy-paste characters from Help tabs.

Instructions
Download the PPC edition of OpenSUSE and burn it to a DVD or CD media using your favorite burning tool.

Preparing the PS3
Note: Updating your PS3 to the latest firmware is recommended before proceeding
