AMD looks to Folding@Home language for gaming physics

50°
311w ago - Nvidia may be working towards making its newly acquired PhysX technology the gaming physics standard, but AMD reckons that there are plenty of other alternatives out there, including using Stanford University's and highly parallel Brook language for gaming physics.

AMD's technical director of sales and marketing, Giusseppe Amato, told Custom PC that Brook 'allows you to use the parallel SIMD (single instruction multiple data) array that we have in every stream processor engine...so basically you can make any type of 3D pictorial mathematics calculation. Can it also be used for the physics of the game? The answer is yes.'

Brook is currently used by Stanford University in the GPU Folding@home client, and the director of the Folding@home project, Vijay Pande, told us that there's no reason why it couldn't work on Nvidia GPUs too. However, Amato says that while the kernel of Brook was used for the Folding@home project, AMD has developed an extended version called Brook Plus, which could be used for gaming physics, as well as many other tasks.

'We took Brook from Stanford,' explained Amato, 'and we extended it. It's an open language, and the libraries are now starting to be built, so this is all very promising.' According to Amato, Brook Plus is still hardware independent,...

A first look at MotorStorm 2: Details and Info!

312w ago - We have new MotorStorm 2 information which is featured in the latest Playstation World Magazine in the UK. MotorStorm 2 is going to be bigger than a sequel to the first muddy racing game; in fact MotorStorm 2 is that big it has its very own island and 16 tracks to race around on!

MotorStorm 2's island is a tropical paradise that allows players to race on several different tracks including jungles, beaches and swamps. The location of the island is in South Pacific and features a volcano - maybe we can expect some volcanic action while racing or something along those lines.

Below is a picture of the island thanks to PlayStation World Magazine.. So now that we know the MotorStorm 2 world is a South Pacific island, what sort of tracks can we expect?

Well looking at the map we can expect beach races, swamps, high mountain encounters and hopefully some snow as you can see there is snow on and around the volcano in the north side of the island.

Obviously MotorStorm 2 offers a variety of environments to race on compared to the desert environments from the first game. The new tracks will feature more multiple ways to find the finish line. This should add a hell of a lot more fun and last appeal.

Apparently water will play a key moment in the game allowing you to cool your...
