Kazunori Yamauchi Reveals New Gran Turismo 5 PS3 Details

50°
250w ago - Autoweek.com (linked above) met with Gran Turismo creator and godfather Kazunori Yamauchi at SEMA and asked him several questions about the upcoming Gran Turismo 5 title for Sony's PS3 console.

To quote from the interview:

When will you release GT5?

Yamauchi: We will release it in March in Japan but for other regions, it has not been decided yet.

What's holding it up?

That's more depending on SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment America) marketing decisions.

Have you spoken with those guys?

My job is to create the product, not sell it.

What's taking so long with the product, then?

From our perspective, it doesn't seem like that long a time. To make Gran Turismo 5, we threw away the legacy code from GT4 and started from scratch. It's been five years from [the release of] GT4, and that's the same amount of time it took to develop the first GT4. To create a game from scratch, that's the amount of time it takes to get it right.

You're at the SEMA show, what do you think?

Every time I come to SEMA, I can feel the passion of the car owners who bring their cars here. The SEMA show is different from what you see at a typical motor show. There is more passion...

According to several sites this weekend, including E4G.info (linked above), Polyphony Digital has confirmed that a Track Editor will be included in the upcoming release of Gran Turismo 5 for Sony's PS3 console.

To quote: With the recent rumors and videos that have been going around about Gran Turismo 5 having a track editor, we decided to contact the developers to find out if it was true or not. Now, we have a official answer.

They were kind enough to give us a quick response and this is what a representative said:

"Yes it will have a track editor. You will be able to rebuild a track from scratch or edit the tracks that are already put in Gran Turismo 5."

Video: Gran Turismo 5 PS3 Packaging Reveals Three Discs

550°
252w ago - GTPlanet (linked above) reports today that Gran Turismo 5's PS3 packaging has been revealed by Kazunori Yamauchi himself in the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG video below... which shows how the car made it into the game.

The GT5 packaging includes room for three mysterious Blu-ray discs.

To quote: The most curious thing, of course, is the fact that the packaging clearly contains three separate Blu-Ray cases - one black, one red, and one blue.

What could they be? While the conspiracy theorists get to work, here's a list of other interesting tidbits from the clip:

• Gran Turismo uses one single physics calculation model, so they simply enter the parameters for each car, and the handling characteristics play themselves out within the game. As Yamauchi says, "If the original car is made well, it'll drive well."

• We get a closer look at the 3D model of the SLS AMG in Gran Turismo 5, along with a corner from the Nurburgring Nordschleife.

• Mercedes' narrarator suggests that Yamauchi is "considering" putting the new SLS AMG on the cover, but Yamauchi's following comments (along with the box art seen earlier) all but confirm it will be the star of the show.

As he explains, it "will probably be the most exciting car in...
