GDC 2008: Lego Indiana Jones First Look

100°
356w ago - During LucasArts' special preview event at the Presidio last week, the game publisher gave media members a first look at Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures. The game, which is scheduled to launch this June following the release of the movie "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," is based on the highly successful Lego Star Wars series.

In fact, the game is being developed by Lego Star Wars creator Traveller's Tales and uses the Lego Star Wars 2 game engine. The Original Adventures will include the first three Indiana Jones movies, and each film will get six levels.

LucasArts gave media members a tour of the beginning of the game, which starts with the opening of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" in the Peruvian jungle. Like the Lego Star Wars titles, Lego Indiana Jones has some fun with its source material and isn't above spoofing the famous adventure series.

The cut scenes involving the Hovitos and the memorable golden idol swap are hilarious; in the game, Indy uses a different object than the simple bag of sand in the film, and the idol itself has a new look (I won't ruin the surprise). By the sound of the laughter filling the LucasArts theater during the demo, I have a feeling the humorous touches for Lego Indiana Jones are going to be a hit with gamers.

Home Free: Why 360 and Wii Owners Should Root for PS3’s Home

50°
356w ago - Although all three consoles of this generation offer online play, originally Microsoft stood alone in it's decision to charge Xbox gamers for the ability to join their friends in online multi-player matches.

Recently this trend has continued with the announcement of Wii Pay & Playthat will similarly charge gamers an as-of-yet-undisclosed fee to take particular Wii titles online. The PlayStation 3 stands alone as the only console that gamers are not asked to pony up any dough whatsoever for online multi-player support.

At present, Microsoft feels confident that the market can sustain the $50 they ask of their Gold members annually. After all, Xbox LIVE offers 360 owners a few things console gamers can't get elsewhere, like player screening, TrueSkill matchmaking, and a reputation system that encourages everybody to play nice.

Regardless of whether or not you feel the subscription fee is justified, Microsoft's success with their LIVE service established an important precedent: It's OK to charge people to play games with one another. Sony has been promoting the fact that they don't charge people to use the PlayStation Network, but currently the PS3's online gaming experience is lacking many of LIVE's popular features, prompting many Xbox fans to declare, "You get what you pay...

Resistance 2 like you’ve never seen it before

356w ago - Here's a little bit of delicious eye candy for all you Resistance fans - Resistance 2 screenshots in extreme size. And by extreme size I mean extreme size - ~5,000px times ~3,000px. We also have them available in 10,000px x 5,000px, but...you know...that would be ridiculous.

Brace yourself though, these images reveal that the game doesn't look quite as good as previously thought. The images we've seen so far are obviously smaller versions of the same shots, and when resizing images this huge, the visual flaws tend to get hidden up pretty well.

Update / Ok, a lot of people seem to think we resized the old images and made them 7 times bigger or something. Rest easy, we did not. As said earlier in this post, the original images were 10,000px in size. And they were released in this form by Sony themselves, so we in fact sized them down 50% to approx. 5,000px so they wouldn't be too ridiculously huge. The point was to give the fans of the R franchise a very detailed look at R2. As Sony probably wanted when they released them in this über-size.

PlayStation Store getting a new look on April 15

100°
356w ago - Sony revealed today that they are sprucing up the PlayStation Store's graphical user interface. They plan to have it up when they release Gran Turismo 5 Prologue on April 15.

It is rumored that it will look a bit like the SingStore and navigation for the site will be via icons at the bottom of the store.

To quote: PlayStation Store Getting Overhauled In April
While Metal Gear Solid 4, DualShock 3 and God of War news may have dominated our Destination PlayStation coverage, one other interesting leak came out of the retailer conference.

According to sources there, the PlayStation Store is finally getting a graphical user interface overhaul, one planned to arrive alongside Gran Turismo 5 Prologue on April 15. The revamp of the PlayStation Store is said to give it a look more in tune with the SingStore, pictured above, which is already accessible from the PlayStation 3 version of SingStar.

Details were light on the change, but beyond a coat of paint, word was that navigation would change to a series of icons running along the bottom of the interface. We don't have official confirmation on this one yet, so consider it rumor for now.
