Sony: 2008 will be a big year for PSN in many ways

341w ago - Eric Lempel of Sony has recently been discussing the progress of the Playstation Network. Lempel notes that while the team is happy with what they have achieved during their first year, they are by no means going to stop merely with what we see today.

He remarks that the great thing about the PSN is they have the capability to alter and upgrade the service to meet the demands of users and concludes that 2008 will be a big year in general for the network.

To quote: "While we are happy with what we've accomplished during our first year, we're by no means going to stop with what you see today. We have a long-term strategy for the service and there are still a good amount of features we haven't delivered. The great thing about the PlayStation Network is that we have the ability to make changes and upgrade the service to meet the demands of our users.

"I recognize that there are a few features that PS3 users have asked for that we haven't delivered yet... We have a lot of features in different stages of development that I think our users will be very excited about.

"I know that an achievement system is very important to our consumers. With Home, and in addition to Home, we have some very exciting programs planned to recognize our consumers gaming skills and loyalty...

PS3 owners get their wish for more Blu-ray adult movies

341w ago - Major adult movie studio Digital Playground has announced eight titles it will be releasing on Blu-ray in February. The studio had initially backed HD DVD but the eight titles it will be releasing on Blu-ray deals a further blow to HD DVD.

A representative for the studio said they were contacted by many PS3 owners who wanted Blu-ray movies for their console. they say however they will continue to support both formats until there is a clear winner.

To quote: Joone says that he was influenced by PlayStation 3 owners asking when their content would be available on Blu-ray.

"A lot of people were emailing that bought a PlayStation and they were basically saying, 'When are you guys going to release Blu-ray?' They really have no preference in format yet because it's so new. When it comes down to image quality, there is no difference between the two," he told CE Pro last month.

Sony discontinues 20GB & 60GB PS3s in Japan

50°
341w ago - Sony have announced today that it would discontinue shipment of both 20GB HDD and 60GB HDD configurations of PS3 after only 3 months since their launch there.

This will leave them with only the 40GB version which does not have backwards compatibility.

From the Press Release: Tokyo, January 10, 2008 - Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) today announced that it would discontinue shipment of both 20GB HDD and 60GB HDD configurations of PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3®) originally launched on November 11th 2006, in the Japanese market after the completion of the final shipment scheduled in January 2008. Upon termination of the shipment, the sales of both models will be limited to stock in the market.

Along with both the increased efforts to improve software development environment and the availability of a more extensive line-up of software titles for PS3, SCEI will vigorously promote the expansion of the PS3 platform by further concentrating on the 40GB HDD (CECHH00 Series) model introduced in November 2007, equipped with the core technology components that make PS3 the most advanced high-definition entertainment system while realizing lower power consumption.

Following the ever greater line-up of the PS3 software during this holiday season, more and more software titles are scheduled...

Blu-ray to accelerate PS3 sales, PS3 price cut by years end?

50°
341w ago - Analysts believe the Warner exclusive Blu-ray news is good for the PS3 and that Blu-rays success will lead to an acceleration of PS3 sales. Around 70 -80% of PS2 owners used the console as their first DVD player and the same could be true of PS3/Blu-ray.

Michael Pachter believes that this year HDTV penetration will cross 50% of households and thats when Blu-ray will become more relevant, and Sony will likely cut the price of the PS3. However others believe that exclusive games are the most important factor and Blu-ray is not a main concern.

To quote: Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan Securities thinks it's an important win, but the real impact won't be felt for some time since 1080p HDTV penetration is still fairly low. He does believe, however, that by the end of this year we'll start seeing a spike and that Sony will likely cut the price on PS3 by then as well.

Blu-ray has clearly gained momentum, and the upper hand, and the Warner announcement also provides a boost to the format, as well as for the advocates of Blu-ray as a standard. That said, locking up the suppliers of content and hardware manufacturers is only part of the equation. Consumers also must decide that they need a Blu-ray player, which seems more and more likely as prices decline," he said.

"As for the...

Everything About Blu-ray-to-PSP Movie Transfers

50°
341w ago - Some Blu-ray-to-PSP movie transfer details have now been revealed. Movies are around 1GB and take 3-5 mins to download via USB to your PSP's Memory Stick Duo. The movies aren't actually stored locally on the PS3.

The service is going to be free and should be available sometime this year. Sony say it can be potentially used on any Blu-ray movie but they're still figuring out how the DRM is going to work with the service.

To quote: Sony is still in the processing of reviewing how the DRM is going to work, and how portable the copies are going to be (important, since they're stored on Mem. Stick Duos, which are pretty pocketable.) In particular, the number of copies you can make from each disc is still up in the air–so it looks like how many friends you can share with is definitely going to be limited.

DRM-wise it's nothing unexpected–given Blu-ray's emphasis on strong copy protection, Sony's obviously not going to give free reign with the PSP copies. But even with some limits placed on the service, it stands to be one of the best PS3-PSP connections yet.
