317w ago - Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) can categorically deny that there is a 40% failure rate on the newly release 40GB PLAYSTATION¬®3 (PS3) as has been reported on a Dutch website. Having launched in October, the 40GB PS3 has encountered the same industry leading, very low failure rates, comparable to the low level failure rates of the 60GB PS3.
"We are very proud of the quality and reliability of PLAYSTATION 3 and are disappointed that such extremely sloppy journalism has resulted in this totally inaccurate story," said David Reeves, President, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. "Since launching the 40GB PS3, we have experienced a fantastic jump in sales and the failure rates have remained at the very low level that we not only strive for, but have been achieving since the launch of PS3."
317w ago - It's been a common excuse for underwhelming early PS3 releases, but according to Infinity Ward, the developer of the Call of Duty series, developing the game on the PlayStation 3 was easy.
Many a developer has moaned at the complexity of the code behind sony's next-gen console, but there were no problems for Infinity Ward as they worked on the newly released Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
They put their success down to the fact that they do not dedicated more energy to one platform - and in fact spread out resources and split up teams to work on the game across the different platforms.
Prioritising one console over the other has resulted in many games being released earlier on one console, and later on another - with the PS3 release of certain games often coming after the Xbox 360 release.
The developer stated, "There's obviously some problem with all the delays we're witnessing. I think it's just down to allocation of resources. I think maybe people feel that they're resource strapped and feel a little bit more comfortable working on the Xbox 360 as it's been out a little longer [than the PS3]."

It is designed for PS3 owners who may have two or more TV displays at home and is said to eliminate the need to set the output resolution on each display which can take quite a bit of time on the PS3 if you are a frequent mover.

317w ago - Good news for designers, you can create your own XMB theme. SCEJ released a program to do that.
Step 1: You will need to download the officialPS3 Theme Tool from Sony's Japanese Web site.
Step 2: Extract the file to a folder on your computer.
Step 3: Open command prompt and navigate to the folder.
Step 4: The folder should contain a sample folder, a GrimConv folder, a p3tcompiler.exe and other assorted files. To create your theme you will need to run the p3tcompiler.exe passing in the sample.xml.
Example: If you are in the p3tcompiler_v101 folder, you run: p3tcompiler .sample1sample.xml
Step 5: This creates a number of .gim files and a sample.p3t files in the sample /01/ directory. Take the sample.p3t file and transfer it to a memory stick in the following location: PS3->THEME
Step 6: Plug the memory stick into your PS3 and select the theme setting, where you will be given an option to install; do so, and you will have your sample theme.
Step 7: To construct your own custom theme, it's a case of editing all of the .png files in the sample directory, and re-run all of the above.
