PS3 winning Charts but not Minds

50°
355w ago - Sony is back in the game, after some hardware tweaking and promotions that are shifting PS3 units. Some recent experiences however tell me that perhaps not all new PS3 owners are up with the capabilities of the machine.

Corporate market analysts iSuppli have already indicated that by 2011 the PS3 will be top of the console pile, and an even more recent analysis quotes 2008 as the year this dominance will emerge:

"2008 will be a turning year for the PS3," iSuppli analyst Pamela Tufegdzic told Reuters. "Sony is offering a better forthcoming software pipeline with blockbuster titles like Gran Turismo 5, which will boost PS3 sales this year."

The report goes on to say; "...Come Christmas, consumers who originally bought the Wii will likely purchase the PS3," she said. "The battle over consoles ultimately boils down to price."

Recently in Australia, Sony offered a free PS3 with any XBR, X or W series Bravia LCD TV . Once the dust had settled on this offer, Sony Australia announced an associated PS3 sales (!) spike of 20,000 plus PS3's. Good numbers in a country of only 20 million residents.

Great, but it seems many of these PS3's went home to unaware households. Click on for a couple of real life recent exchanges regarding PlayStation 3 usage in a modern home.

PS3 in-game communications like X-Box Live, but free

400°
355w ago - Sony's UK boss Ray Maguire recently mentioned that in-game communication would be introduced to the PS3 this summer.

Daniel Dawkins, editor of PSM3 Magazine, has since said that this will bring the PS3 up to parity with X-Xox Live but that the key difference is that it's free.

To quote: TechRadar spoke with Daniel Dawkins, editor of PSM3 Magazine, this morning who told us: "This brings the PS3 up to parity with Xbox Live, the key difference being that it's free".

Dawkins added: "Sony is working its best to respond to what gamers want. The amount of evolution in terms of the firmware updates over the last year has been phenomenal."

TechRadar also spoke with Sony Computer Entertainment reps this morning. They informed us that they were currently not making any official announcements or issuing any further information on exactly how in-game comms on PS3 are set to be improved.

Saints Row 2 First Look

50°
355w ago - It's not easy for a company to make an open-world game that stands totally separate form the titan that is Grand Theft Auto. THQ went the opposite direction of other companies and decided to make their first entry into the free-roaming gangster genre what was essentially a re-skinned GTA.

Luckily for the publisher no one had seen GTA on next-gen systems so Saints Row was their only option for a high-def world of free-roaming destruction. Now it's the year 2008, gamers everywhere are gearing up for Grand Theft Auto IV and yet the people at THQ don't seem worried.

In fact, they seem downright confident that Saints Row 2 will be able to woo gamers away from Rockstar's latest. Just last week we got a look at a very early build and while we weren't allowed to delve deep into what the city of Stillwater holds this time around, we can say that the building blocks are once again in place for a rousing open-world thugfest.

As those who played through the first Saints Row know by now, your nameless character was taken out at the end of the storyline thanks to a well-timed boat bomb (like a car bomb, but on a boat). Somehow your kingpin survived the explosion, but not without serious cosmetic damage.

Thus the fact that you begin the new storyline by reshaping your character's physique at...

Sony's PlayStation 3 Video Store Sounds Ready To Go

200°
355w ago - The current PlayStation Store is a bit of a clunker. It's functionally sound, but a bit rough around the edges from a usability standpoint. Compared to the rest of the PlayStation 3's visual design, it's certainly lacking–but that's reportedly going to change come Springtime, as the Store is said to get a new coat of paint.

One aspect of the Store that's been hinted about by reliable publications, like the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal, is Sony's download service, one that president Howard Stringer may be talking about when he refers to the "expansion" of the PlayStation Network.

It may be Sony's best bet in fending off Apple's iTunes for movie and television distribution. And it may be closer than we thought.

Sure, it's been a long time coming, with first reports of the digital download venture hitting in December of 2006, but Sony's been awfully quiet about when it's coming.

According to sources who attended the retailer and publisher focused Destination PlayStation conference last week in Scottsdale, Arizona, Sony showed off a portion of its video store. It reportedly uses the same SingStore-like interface we talked about in our PlayStation Store revamp post, something we hoped to capture in the mock-up of the video store above.

No specifics on launch...

Wal-Mart breaks street date on MLB08 and others

50°
355w ago - Wal-Mart has broken the street date of MLB 08: The Show as well as Major League Baseball 2K8 and others today according to me, who recently purchased both titles early this morning.

Although it is only 1 day early for the release, Wal-Mart has made a big no no here.

If only they would break Army of Two...
