Why the PS3 still isn't hacked

400°
343w ago - "Why isn't the PS3 broken already?" We hear this every day. Someone somewhere thinks they can write a better media player with HD support. A guy wants to release his game but needs the RSX for the amazing graphics it can generate. Why can't we just tear open the PS3 solder a few wires and be done with it? The answer is both simpler and more complicated than you might expect.

The PSP, the Wii, even the Xbox 360 have all been hacked and can run homebrew applications so everybody thinks "the PS3 should be just as easy." The PS3 in some ways is as easy, in fact easier. No other console let you install Linux and run anything you want to. Sure Linux on the PS3 is great. You can write your own code and use it. You have the largest collection of applications anywhere (thats right, WAY more than Windows). It's all free (or at a very low cost).

But it's limited. You can't touch the RSX (The very powerful graphics chip in the PS3), you can't use the full hard drive, and nothing is really optimized for the PS3's fantastic Cell processor, this means that what should be fast and easy tends to be slow and cumbersome. In fact, DVD playing which can be done on any modern computer is a monumental task in PS3 Linux.

The major problem is that the PS3 isn't any other console. The PS3 is different...

Best Buy discontinues 80GB PS3, only stocking 40GB version

50°
343w ago - A leaked internal letter has revealed that Best Buy is to remove the 80GB PS3 system from its on January 28th and the PS3 60GB SKU should already all be gone.

Only the 40GB PS3 will be sold in Best Buy stores at the end of the month.

To quote: "It will come off the planogram on Jan. 28. The 60GB version should already be gone from stores. Only the 40GB version of PS3 will be sold in Best Buy stores at this time."

The 40GB model currently costs $399, and is the cheapest PS3 available. However, it does have a few limitations: it lacks memory card readers, features only two USB ports, and most importantly, loses backwards compatability, as noted in the memo. "This means that there currently isn't a version that is PS2 compatible," it notes.

There have been very shady rumors suggesting Sony is planning on introducing a cheaper $299 version of its console (although that has been repeatedly denied by Sony). Earlier in the week, we also discovered an FCC filing for a white model PS3. Whatever's going on, it appears that Sony's making moves for a big change. Stay tuned.

The next Uncharted may have melee weapons

343w ago - Richard Diamant Interview Part 3: "We Want Melee Objects In The Second Version"

And so we come to the final entry in our three part interview with Naughty Dog's Lead Character Artist, Richard Diamant. It's been a interesting journey of exchanges, from the advantages of Blu-ray, all the way to the meticulous creation of Uncharted's characters.

The final part of our interview explores Uncharted's animation system, filmic inspirations, the possibility of new melee capabilities in the next project, along with Naughty Dog's current relationship with Insomniac.

Please click on these links for the first and second parts of the interview, which saw us touch upon Uncharted's art style, water, character creation process, and Richard's background before joining Naughty Dog.

Patrick: The animation of Drake is extremely impressive - watching him duck bullets, flinch from explosions, and show expressions on his face is a sight to behold. Can you explain your animation system in more depth?

Richard: Our animation system is actually very impressive. It allows us to layer animation on top of each other. That means the animators can animate a walk cycle, then an upper body duck animation, another upper body flinch animation, and then our engine can blend them all...
