ThatGameCompany’s Devs create game in 24 hours

50°
355w ago - To quote from the source above: Hello, I'm Kellee Santiago from thatgamecompany, creators of flOw, and currently in development on flOwer. The fine people at Playstation.Blog are good enough to allow me to use my first post here to let you all in on a little thing we have going on here at thatgamecompany call the 24hr Game Jam.

Championed by our lead engineer John Edwards, the 24hr Game Jam was created as a way for us to do something quick, dirty, and fun ... and maybe let out a little steam in the process. The goal is always to make a game, from start to finish, on the PS3 in 24hrs.

We go from 10am Saturday to 10am Sunday, and then whatever we have, we lock it up. Future Game Jams might have more specific goals, but for this first one, we just wanted to see how much fun we could make in a day. Oh, and our game designer Nick Clark wanted something that was multiplayer that we could enjoy in the office.

So welcome... to Game Jam 0: Gravediggers

Goals:

* To see how much fun we could generate in 24 hours.
* To make something multiplayer we could play in the office.

Premise/Rules:

Player

You are a gravedigger. There can be up to 6 gravediggers competing against one another locally....

PS3 TEST Backup Launcher V.001 Alpha WIP

800°
355w ago - While we await the start of our PS3 KeyVault Project for retail PS3 consoles, below is a screenshot of something else I have been tinkering with recently via Debug.

As hinted by PS3News already HERE, it is a Backup Launcher for a PS3 Development Unit as shown. At the moment it it still pre-Alpha and very incomplete, however it allows:

- Boot PS3 Games from HDD
- Boot PS3 Games from DVD/BD-ROM
- Copy Original PS3 Games from DVD/BD-ROM to HDD
- Patch the executable on some games to run from HDD

Note: This will ONLY work on a DEVELOPMENT CONSOLE, not a RETAIL PS3 unit!

To be added soon:

- Read PARAM.SFO for name/titleid, patch to menu (Alpha is hard-coded)
- Support for deleting games from the menu
- Support a few more games to start (Alpha is hard-coded for four)
- Possible support for a "select" menu, versus the button presses

Optimistic things to be added:

- A better GUI
- Backing up PS3 Game files to PC

For those curious, how it works briefly: when the launcher is started, you can copy a game to the PS3 HDD. It will create a folder on the hard disk and copy the Game...

MLB 2K8 vs MLB 08: The Show!

50°
355w ago - While I've previously gone through my initial impressions of MLB 2K8 and MLB 08: The Show, I figured it would be interesting to match the two games up in different categories and determine which came out on top.

Of course those with only a 360 don't have a choice in the matter, but it's important to know what is being done well and what isn't both on their own individual terms as well as competitively for the future of these franchises.

The two games headed into release taking completely different paths. 2K8 dramatically changed the central mechanics and practically hid the game as very few videos could be found along with (intentionally or not) submitting the demo too late for it to be out prior to release.

The Show stayed the course while improving its already stellar gameplay, was very open with media, and the demo was several weeks out in front of the release date. Generally those are signs that can be read, and in this case the assumptions that were being made seem to have been accurate.

Pitching:
The most significant change this year was 2K8 switching to Total Pitch Control which solely uses right analog motions. It requires some practice and patience to learn and get comfortable with. I feel they had good intentions and it works relatively well (except for...

ThreeSpeech getting ready to reveal Motorstorm 2 info?

50°
355w ago - ThreeSpeech has posted up a count down timer on its site with the words "A NEW BREED OF WARRIOR WILL BE BORN...".

These words are also said in the introduction of the original Motorstorm, so it is believed we may see a video of Motorstorm 2 in action and maybe some info about the game.

For now it's mere speculation, but more info to come as it's available!

Have the Big Three Learned from the Saturn's Mistake?

50°
355w ago - When I originally proposed this story, I called it "The Saturnization of PlayStation 3" because I saw some striking parallels between the way SEGA handled its ill-fated Saturn game console and the way Sony's been handling its PS3. Of late, though, Sony has shown signs of reasonable intelligence.

While working on the backstory of this article, I became aware that the real analogies are not between SEGA and Sony; they are between Microsoft and SEGA.

History repeats?

When I first mentioned my story idea to John Taylor, a savvy videogames analyst working for Arcadia Investment Corporation, he said, "If I were your editor I would ask, Who remembers the Saturn and why is it relevant?"

I think, though, if you look carefully, you will see parallels.

It has been 12 years since Saturn first appeared, and a lot of people have forgotten about the system, but lessons learned at that time are no less valuable today.

So let's talk history. SEGA, a Japanese company founded by Americans after the Korean War, has a long and successful history in coin-operated entertainment. It also has a history as a console manufacturer, but that history is spotty at best.

In 1986, SEGA made an unsuccessful bid to compete with the Nintendo Entertainment System (known as the...
