Double Boost For Blu-ray Backers!

100°
344w ago - The backers of the Blu-ray high definition DVD system have received a twin boost in their ongoing format war with HD DVD.

Best Buy - the US's largest consumer electronics chain - has announced it is to recommend that its customers choose Sony's Blu-ray format.

Its shops will carry HD DVD but Blu-ray will be displayed more prominently.

And online video rental company Netflix said it would phase out its HD DVD stock and exclusively offer Blu-ray.

Studio backing

Netflix has become the US's largest company in a fast-growing field - DVD rental by mail - and announced a year ago that it had made its billionth DVD delivery after just eight years in business.

It has stocked both Blu-ray and HD DVD since the formats came on the market in early 2006 but said it had been prompted to reconsider this after a majority of the major Hollywood studios came out in favour of Blu-ray.

Walt Disney, Sony Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox, Warner Brothers and MGM are the studios that have endorsed Blu-ray. Paramount and Universal Studios publish their high-definition DVDs in Toshiba's HD DVD format.

The company also said the reality was that not many customers were ordering HD DVDs. "From the Netflix perspective, focusing on one format will enable...

Resident Evil 5: People are going to "flip out"

50°
344w ago - Capcom's assuring us we'll all go bonkers - in a good way - over Resident Evil 5, and we're desperately hoping that turns out to be true.

"Just being able to see Resident Evil 5 running, I'm like 'Oh my god!' Honestly, when we start showing more of that, when we start letting people go hands-on with that, people are going to flip out", Capcom's Chris Kramer (senior director of communications and community) has said in an interview with Major Nelson.

"That game to me is super exciting", Kramer added.

He explained he's just returned from a trip to Japan where he met with producers on games coming in the next two years, and later sparked speculation about Resident Evil 5's release date.

When asked what's coming up from Capcom, he replied, "We have a really fantastic year ahead of us, a year that's going to include games like... Resident Evil 5...".

Alluding to a release in 2008, or simply the fact that we'll get hands-on reports this year? Surely the latter.

Far Cry 2 Devs "Worried" by PS3...

50°
344w ago - Sony's complex PS3 hardware is a 'nice fit' for Ubisoft's ambitious Far Cry 2 - but developers Ubisoft Montreal admit that compromises have been made. "We were somewhat worried by some of the reported high complexity of developing for the PS3", reveals Tech Director Dominic Guay, "but the raw processing power is impressive".

After a slew of delays, and some unfavourable comparisons between 'identical' Xbox 360 and PS3 ports, it seems developers are finally getting to grips with Sony's machine. "We made sure we had a group of programmers that were not scared by complexity and had a large console programming experience to work on the initial PS3 R&D of Dunia (Far Cry 2's graphics engine). At that point, we didn't know what to expect."

"One thing that we realized pretty quickly as we started R&D on PS3, was that the hardware architecture had a very nice fit with some of our technical design decisions. We were positively surprised by how efficient the SPUs (the Cell processing units) were to do such things as run our vegetation simulation, our animations or our physics systems. So while it did require quite a bit of R&D to understand how to use the system correctly, once we started having results we saw that it was a very capable console and that FC2 could run on it."

Resistance 2 - Attack on the USA - Exclusive new details!

200°
344w ago - Resistance 2 will feature the Chimera in a major onslaught at the San Francisco Bay Bridge and other American landmarks.

Insomniac games have finally started talking facts. In a major feature of the Official PlayStation Magazine UK they have revealed a number of exciting new details. Resistance 2 continues where the first game finished, with Nathan travelling to Iceland, the base of SRPA (Special Projects Research Administration.)

When he gets there he discovers that there are others humans who have been infected by mutant DNA who also have mutant healing and telepathic abilities. They have been bought together as a task force known as the Sentinels, each with their own abilities and weapons.

The Multi-player modes are not tacked-on cameos to the single player game, they are fully fledged co-stars! A lot of work has been put into the co-op. Lead Designer Colin Munson says "Eight players is that sweet team size. It's enough so that you pretty much know the people on your team but it's big enough to let new players in."

The co-op campaign will focus on teamwork, with the game testing players ability to work together. "The initial bridge attack forces players to deal with danger from multiple angles. The Titans meanswhile require the squad to divide and conquer, as these behomoths...

Rumor Update: Left 4 Dead headed to PlayStation 3

50°
344w ago - Update: Frenzied, we touched base with Valve Doug Lombardi who says "There is no PS3 version of Left 4 Dead announced, nor in development. Not sure how that got started."

His answer seems pretty straight forward, but we're still holding out hope that the game will make its way to the PS3.

Words can't express how badly I need to be playing Left 4 Dead right now. Turtle Rock Studios' cooperative multiplayer survival-horror first-person shooter not only falls into more genres than you can shake a stick at, but it also looks damned good.

For now, Turtle Rock has only announced the title for the Xbox 360 and the PC. And, if you were totally hardcore, you'd at least own an Xbox 360 or a PC capable of running the game when it's released later this year. But for you chumps who are not hardcore and only own a PlayStation 3 (note: I'm kidding here, don't start calling me names), we have some good news -- it may soon be coming to Sony's console as well.

During the latest episode of the 1UP Yours podcast, Electronic Gaming Monthly's previews editor Bryan Intihar drops a bit of knowledge, saying that Left 4 Dead will be coming to the Xbox 360, PC, and the PlayStation 3. He quickly adds that while it hasn't been announced, he knows it's coming out.

I touched base with Bryan,...
