Nothing but Fighting in 2008...

50°
341w ago - For the past few years, we've only needed a single hand to count the number of new and interesting fighting games being released each year--especially if we didn't count the near annual re-release of certain vintage titles.

This year, however, looks to be drastically different; the planets seem to be aligned and are bringing with them a ton of incredible new games. From Japanese homebrew projects turned arcade superstars to the return of the icon, 2008 is loaded with more fisticuffs than a Las Vegas cage fight.

Street Fighter IV
Developer: Capcom
Platform: Arcade

In the early '90s, the joke went that Capcom lacked the ability to count to three when it came to their Street Fighter franchise. They managed to graduate kindergarten in 1997, and Three: A New Generation of Street Fighters was born. While its update, 3rd Strike (1999), is still the most played fighter on the competitive circuit to this day, that hasn't stopped gamers from desperately wanting a Street Fighter IV.

Capcom is set to deliver this year, with a 3D update to the series that is as rife with controversy as the company's decision to ditch series staples was back in 1997. The focus of Street Fighter IV rests solely on the casual player who longs for the nostalgia of their youth with simplified mechanics...

ImageMetrics Facial Animation Tapped For UT3, GTA IV

50°
341w ago - Animation software company Image Metrics has revealed that its proprietary facial animation solution was used to animate characters in games including 2K Games' Top Spin 3, Epic's Unreal Tournament 3, and Rockstar's Midnight Club Los Angeles and Grand Theft Auto IV.

The company says its animation solution animates faces without the need for markers or makeup, and is able to translate human movement onto the faces of game characters.

For example, for Top Spin 3, Image Metrics produced 10 minutes of facial animation, focused mainly on reaction shots for the tennis title. The company also held a two-day recording session at Epicıs North Carolina studio to create the necessary video for Unreal Tournament 3, and provided performance capture animation for six characters in all cut scenes.

Epic Games president Michael Capps commented, "It was critical to maintain our high level of cinematic quality while reducing the amount of manual animation effort. We chose Image Metrics to be our partner on Unreal Tournament 3 and were quite pleased with their effort and the end result."

Lost Planet for PS3 requires 5GB Installation

50°
341w ago - Capcom was kind enough to send us a pre-release copy of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition for our PlayStation 3. Surprisingly, just like Devil May Cry 4, Capcom also requires a 5GB installation that can take up to 15-20 minutes.

Only this time, there isn't much to read on-screen, and it's pretty much pointless to sit in front of the TV watching it install so very slowly.

While we are confident that the 5GB installation is worth it, will this be a Capcom requirement for all of their PS3 titles? Perhaps.
