PS3 Blu-ray Drive Connected and Recognized as Reader in a PC!

750°
211w ago - This weekend Spanish PS3 developers at DemonHades (linked above) have shared some details and pics of a PS3 Blu-ray drive successfully connected and recognized as a reader in a PC.

With the exception of the Lite-On DH-401S that can read PS3 game discs on a PC, this is the first time an actual PlayStation 3 PS-SYSTEM 302R drive has been reported as functioning on a standard PC.

Many may recall last year the DemonHades Team first Mapped the JTag Port on PS3 Blu-ray Drive, and prior to that GodzIvan shared schematics for the PS3 Blu-ray drive pin-outs.

To quote from DemonHades.org, roughly translated:

"Our colleague has managed HadesTeam Calimba of connecting the PS3 BD player to the PC, as you all know the communication interface that uses the reader is bd flex belt so you do not have any type of connector for this work, so we have communicated BD reader to the pc to start to investigate...

Video: Project to Run PS1/PS2 Back-ups on PS3 with a Mod-Chip

214w ago - The DemonHades Spanish PS3 Development team has been working on a project which aims to utilize a mod-chip to run PS1 and PS2 back-ups on a PS3 console without opening it or using switches and have posted up a concept video today.

According to one individual with a highly questionable reputation, this concept project could work because PS1/PS2 discs are authenticated only once on the VSH though liblv2 and the PIC chip would just automate it.

However, if Sony updates liblv2.sprx and more specifically ps1rom.bin so the emulated mechacon is updated it could be patchable.

Finally, to roughly translate from the video's caption:

"This video montage shows the operation of the chip that we are developing to load copies of PS1 and PS2 (if you're retro) in the PS3.

This video shows how to...

GeoHot Retires from PS3 and iPhone Hacking, Others to Lead On

1200°
214w ago - Today George Hotz aka GeoHot has announced he is retiring from Sony PS3 and Apple iPhone hacking, citing that the demand for updates from end-users will never stop.

In his exit from the PS3 scene, GeoHot left many legitimate PlayStation 3 users without OtherOS and without the promised 3.21OO PS3 Custom Firmware.

The good news? Others whom GeoHot shared the PS3 METLDR info and LV2 dump with are currently using his work to continue hacking the PS3 console, with rumors from IRC (for what those are worth LOL) indicating a public "end-user" PS3 hack may arrive before September 2010 from their camp.

Unfortunately though, just like the past Dark_AleX and "M33" PSP releases, an incoming PS3 hack will probably be from a fictitious group and won't include anything useful to PS3 Devs such as dumps, reversals, sourcecode, etc.

Hopefully once a hole that Sony can't block is public, other PlayStation 3 Devs will begin working on the PS3 though... and sharing all the juicy...

217w ago - Yesterday some videos were posted of GeoHot's iPad, iPhone, iPod coverage from Nuit Du Hack in Paris, and today we have some videos and a slideshow (PDF) of the PS3 hacks segment from the conference courtesy of malow82.

Forum user xrayglasses attended one of GeoHot's scheduled conferences, and stated the following to quote:

"He's booking for talks at 3 cons, I only got to see the one he just did in France. He's [Register or Login to view links] his talks around PlayStation 3 security, and when he comes on basically talks about i-products for two hours with a mention of PS3 in the last 10 minutes, literally in the same details as his blog.

In videos of it on youtube, you can hear people there laughing when he integrates his ego into his talk. I don't think he realizes what a small fish he is in the RE community.

He even said publicly that he was contracted to reverse the iphone which really...

Red Dead Redemption PS3 Free XP Glitch Exploit Surfaces

650°
217w ago - Update: As confirmed by KRaZE HERE, Rockstar has now fixed the Red Dead Redemption PS3 Free XP Glitch Exploit.

Today Gamerzines.com (linked above) reported on a Red Dead Redemption PS3 'Free XP' glitch exploit that has surfaced to plague Rockstar's open world action-adventure Western video game.

When traveling to the various gang hideouts on the map, although finding the enemies won't spawn, users are currently receiving a "Hideout Complete" message and being awarded with Free XP.

Of course, some players are exploiting this Red Dead Redemption PS3 glitch as follows, to quote:

"Those looking to exploit such a glitch, will be able to continually select 'Replay' on the Personal Stats screen, and begin to quickly rank their character in a matter of minutes.

Keep doing so, and you'll be able to whizz your way righ up to level 50, unlocking all weapons, steeds etc on the way."

Below is a clip of the Red Dead Redemption PS3 glitch exploit in action, courtesy of red8316!
