Opinion: PS3, Blu-Ray, & Sony As Global Infant

50°
340w ago - In a fiery opinion piece, game designer/author Ian Bogost examines NPD chart trends to suggest that Sony's lack of unified message on PS3, Blu-ray and the 'average consumer' is rendering ineffective its pitch to users.

Sony is a global conglomerate which is significantly different from its hardware competitors in the video game industry. It makes consumer electronics ranging from telephones to computers to GPS units.

It publishes video games, movies, and music. It also maintains an army of support businesses, including banks, insurance providers, facility management companies, staffing services, and packaging providers.

The business strategy makes sense: control as much of the market for both electronics and the media we use them for. That's why Sony purchased CBS Records and Columbia Pictures in the late 1980s; they wanted to own part of the content people played on their Walkmans and VCRs.

The problem is, Sony's corporate subsidiaries don't work well together, on a scale far worse than other multinational conglomerates. The company is more feudal state than networked global multinational.

I'll give you just one example from a previous life consulting for Sony Pictures Entertainment. The first installment of Spider-Man...

GDC 2008 Predictions

50°
340w ago - With the Game Developer's Conference of 2008 get ready to launch on Monday, it's a busy week ahead. With that in mind we've decided to bring you the predictions and expectations:

- Insomniac Games "Special Presentation" (possibly Resistance 2)
- Dark Sector (first look and hands on with multiplayer)
- Interstellar Marines
- Echochrome
- GT5 Prologue
- Secret Agent Clank
- God of War Chains of Olympus
- New Warhawk DLC
- Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds
- King of Fighters XII
- Star Wars Force Unleashed
- Prototype
- Street Fighter IV

And that's just for starters. Some other things readers can possibly look forward to include EA's Mirrors Edge and Battlefield Bad Company, as well as Steel Monkey's 2 Days to Vegas and Fantasy Lab's Danger Planet.

However I do have some disappointing details about GDC that may ruin some of the excitement for you. Apparently Sony will be keeping a low profile this year at GDC. This means that people can expect such games as Killzone 2, The Getaway, Motorstorm 2, and possibly even Home to not make an appearance.

When I spoke with SCEA, they told me that they were not planning any full-scale media events for GDC, however their plans were not 100% nailed down yet.

Warhawk 1.3 Patch Detailed

200°
340w ago - Dylan Jobe, Warhawk Game Director, has released details on the game's version 1.3 patch. The patch will include full integration with Sony's upcoming Home service, enabling players to form groups, meet in their apartments, discuss tactics, and then launch a game of Warhawk - all straight from within the confines of HOME.

How will it work? Provided that you're in your apartment, just pull up your virtual PSP, select Create Game and choose Warhawk from the menu prompt. From there you can start up your own server and configure game settings.

What's more, is that you'll be hide your game from the public and let only friends join. Games launched from within HOME will appear on the server list in the color gold.

Numerous VO-IP upgrades are planned for the patch. Jobe says players will now be able to select from either PTT or Open-Mic mode, tune the voice-activation level, and enable cross-team chat support.

As for in-game content, the update will feature two new pieces of equipment, including a Mechanic's Field Wrench and Bio-Field Generator. Some player-created customizations will also be making their way into the update.

No set release date has been provided for the patch yet.

The Metal Gear Saga Explained: MGS4 and More

50°
340w ago - Everybody - almost everybody - has been waiting, eagerly for the chance to start up their PS3s and boot up a round of MGS4. The series has been around for a while now, since 1987 for the original Metal Gear game, and the first PS version, Metal Gear Solid back in 1998 and the series come a long way since then.

So let's begin the basics of the game. I'll assume that most of you already know the central characters in the game, because otherwise why would you even be reading this? But if you don't and are still reading, please help yourself to Google or Wikipedia to understand what the hell I'm talking about.

The crux of the entire game lies in the Successor project introduced in Portable ops by character called "Gene" (who was created to become the perfect field commander). The Boss, Naked Snake (Big Boss), Gray Fox/Ninja/Frank Jaeger, Solid, Liquid and Solidus are all parts of this project initiated by the Philosophers and this legacy continues with the formation of the Patriots whom we get to a little later.

The Boss, along with a couple of others (Gene/the Cobra Unit) make up the origin of the Successor project initiated by the Philosophers. This is the starting point of all the events that ultimately culminate into MGS4 and beyond (Yes there is a beyond).Within Portable Ops, both...
